Chinese manufacturers have successfully popularized fast charging in the mobile phone market

【Phoneauto News】Today, due to the lack of breakthroughs in battery technology, charging technology has become one of the key focuses for smartphone manufacturers to compete. In the second half of 2022, 200W wired charging and 240W wired charging were successively introduced. Moreover, recently, Phoneauto noticed that according to surveys, fast charging technology has become popular in the smartphone market, with over 80% of smartphones supporting fast charging.

The report shows that the global average fast charging power of smartphones has steadily increased, from 18W in the first quarter of 2018 to 30W in the first quarter of 2022, and currently stands at 34W in the first quarter of 2023. The improvement in charging speed is mainly due to the increasing demand from consumers to extend battery life, as the demand surges with the increase in smartphone features and enhancements in camera, display, and processor technologies.

By carefully observing the competitive landscape, we can find that Chinese smartphone manufacturers are leading the fast charging race, with an average fast charging power of over 50W. These brands are utilizing fast charging as a unique capability to attract customers. For example, realme and Xiaomi both offer devices with charging power exceeding 200W. In addition, Xiaomi and OPPO have recently showcased smartphones with astonishing 300W fast charging capabilities, which can fully charge the built-in battery in less than 10 minutes.

However, unlike Chinese smartphone manufacturers, Samsung and Apple, these two non-Chinese large smartphone manufacturers, have a more cautious attitude towards fast charging. Currently, Apple’s iPhone 14 series models still only support a maximum of 20W fast charging, although this situation may change with the iPhone 15 series, and the charging speed of the Samsung S23 Ultra is only 45W.
