Global smartphone production hits new low at 250 million units in Q1, lowest in almost a decade
【PhoneAuto News】On June 7th, according to the TrendForce survey, the global smartphone production in the first quarter of 2023 was only 250 million units, a decrease of 19.5% compared to the same period in 2022. The decline is not only the largest in history but also set a new record low for quarterly production since 2014.
Samsung S23 series
Benefiting from the launch of the flagship Galaxy S23 series, Samsung’s smartphone production in the first quarter reached 61.5 million units, a 5.5% increase compared to the previous quarter. However, due to the fading heat of the new models, the estimated production in the second quarter is expected to decline by nearly 10%. Apple’s smartphone production in the first quarter totaled 53.3 million units, a decrease of 32.9% compared to the previous quarter. Among them, the production of the new iPhone 14 series accounted for about 78%, which was better than the same period last year. It is estimated that the production in the second quarter will decrease by about 20% due to the transition period between new and old models.

OPPO (including OPPO, realme, and OnePlus) had a production volume of 26.8 million units in the first quarter, a decrease of 17% compared to the previous quarter. Due to its more aggressive destocking strategy and a slight recovery in demand in Southeast Asia and other regions, the production volume in the second quarter is expected to increase by about 25% compared to the previous quarter. It is worth mentioning that, in addition to continuously consolidating its market share of high-end models in China, OPPO has achieved significant sales performance in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, with overseas sales accounting for nearly 60% of its total sales.
Xiaomi (including Redmi and POCO) had a production volume of 26.5 million units in the first quarter, a decrease of 27.4% compared to the previous quarter. The main reason is still the low consumer confidence worldwide, and Xiaomi’s finished product inventory level remains high. Therefore, the production plan is relatively conservative. Due to continued inventory adjustment in the second quarter, the growth rate of quarterly production is limited, with an estimated increase of about 20%. vivo (including vivo and iQOO) had a production volume of 20 million units in the first quarter, a decrease of 14.2% compared to the previous quarter. Currently, the main sales market is still in China, and the estimated production volume in the second quarter is expected to increase by about 10% compared to the previous quarter.
Due to the sustained economic downturn, transactions in the second-hand mobile phone and repair markets are less active than before, which may hinder the growth of second-quarter smartphone production. In summary, it is estimated that second-quarter smartphone production will reach 260 million units, an increase of about 5% compared to the previous quarter, supported by seasonal demand. However, affected by the poor overall economic environment, it is still almost 10% lower than the same period last year.
