Mazda won't increase MX-5 Miata's power or compete with Toyota GR 86

【phoneauto News】The Mazda MX-5 Miata is a classic lightweight sports car that has been beloved by car enthusiasts since its debut in 1989. However, with the introduction of the Toyota GR 86 and Subaru BRZ, many fans were hoping that Mazda would also improve the power of the MX-5 Miata to compete with these two rivals. However, Mazda’s executives have poured cold water on these expectations. They recently stated that Mazda is not interested in increasing the power of the MX-5 Miata.

In an interview with the foreign media CarBuzz, Jeff Guyton, Mazda’s President for North America, said, “We won’t do that. We won’t pursue higher power and we won’t compete with the Toyota GR 86 or Subaru BRZ. We have our own concept, and we believe that our product is unique.”

Guyton explained that the core value of the MX-5 Miata is lightweight and handling, not acceleration and top speed. He said, “We believe that the MX-5 Miata is a car that can give people a sense of joy and freedom when driving. It doesn’t need a lot of horsepower or a larger torque. It only needs a balanced weight distribution, a flexible suspension, precise steering, and a responsive gearbox.”

Guyton also stated that the MX-5 Miata still has strong demand in the global market, especially in the United States and Japan. He said, “We are very satisfied with the sales of the MX-5 Miata. It is a very successful model and a very emotional and distinctive one. We will continue to maintain this style and continuously improve it.”
