Old Brother’s Confidence! BMW believes that it is ahead of Tesla in terms of batteries.

BMW's Strong Confidence Company Claims Superiority in Battery Technology over Tesla

【PhoneAuto News】BMW believes that its new battery design is key to the next generation of electric vehicles. The German car manufacturer points out that with the new battery, companies like Tesla (not BMW) will need to catch up in order to keep up with BMW.

BMW’s first cylindrical battery sample will provide power for its next generation electric vehicles starting in 2025, with an expected increase of 20% in energy and up to 30% in range. The battery cost of these batteries is projected to decrease by 50% compared to the current generation of prismatic batteries, and the carbon emissions associated with production are expected to be reduced by 60%.

When asked about its strategy to close the gap with competitors like Tesla by European Automotive News, Milan Nedeljković, head of BMW Group Production, pointed out that BMW doesn’t need to catch up with anyone. “Tesla needs to close the gap with us. In fact, we don’t see a gap with Tesla,” he said.

During a media event last week, this BMW executive shared some optimistic insights on battery technology. He also expressed excitement about BMW’s new electric motor lineup, noting that it differs from other motors on the market. “The battery designs we have are appropriate for our products and our vision of achieving driving performance. That’s why we also have our own electric motor designs. They are completely different from other products on the market,” he said.

While BMW’s enthusiasm for its new generation battery is admirable, the German car manufacturer may ultimately face challenges in scaling up production of the new type of electric vehicle battery. After all, even industry leader Tesla faced difficulties with the production of its 4680 batteries during 2020. Elon Musk has previously pointed out that large-scale production of new technology is an extremely challenging task.

However, BMW’s next-generation battery seems to be on the right track. In addition to the cylindrical batteries similar to Tesla’s 4680 battery, BMW’s new battery also has a higher nickel content and lower cobalt content, making it more environmentally friendly. BMW also states that its goal is to recycle 95% of the materials used for high-voltage electric vehicle batteries.
