Changsha to Construct the Most Advanced Factory for Guangzhou Automobile Group, Initial Production Capacity of 200,000 Vehicles Annually

[PhoneAuto News] In Changsha Economic Development Zone, modern factories stand tall, among which the GAC Mitsubishi Changsha Plant used to be a key player in Changsha’s automotive industry. However, with the complete takeover by GAC Aion, this factory is about to usher in new vitality. According to PhoneAuto’s understanding, GAC Aion Changsha Branch has been registered and established on October 8th. Subsequently, on October 24th, GAC Group announced plans to adjust the equity of GAC Mitsubishi and GAC Mitsubishi Automotive Sales Company through restructuring. After the restructuring is completed, GAC Mitsubishi will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of GAC Group, and GAC Aion will utilize the GAC Mitsubishi plant to achieve increased production and expanded capacity.

Currently, GAC Aion Changsha Branch has invested over 4 billion yuan to comprehensively transform and upgrade the original GAC Mitsubishi workshop process equipment, power facility workshop process equipment, power facilities, and part of the factory buildings. The company’s leader introduced that the new factory will be the most automated and technologically advanced factory in GAC Group. The first phase of the project will have an annual production capacity of 200,000 vehicles, with plans to achieve mass production by June 2024.

As a well-known domestic new energy vehicle manufacturer, GAC Aion is the largest unicorn company in China in terms of financing scale in 2022. In October of this year, GAC Aion’s monthly sales reached 41,503 vehicles, an increase of 38% compared to the same period last year. Sales for the first 10 months of this year totaled 392,489 vehicles, an increase of 85% year-on-year.

This comprehensive takeover of the GAC Mitsubishi Changsha Plant by GAC Aion is not only a strategic adjustment within GAC Group but also an important milestone in the development of Changsha’s new energy vehicle industry. With SAIC Volkswagen’s announcement to start production of new energy vehicles in Changsha in 2024, the new energy vehicle industry in Changsha will experience further growth. Currently, Hunan Province already has more than 10 new energy vehicle production enterprises, including BYD Changsha, BAIC Zhaoye, and CRRC Electric, with an annual output ranking fourth in the country.
