Is everything resolved? Apple catches counterfeit App but blames legitimate App developers
[Mobile China News] On November 24th, Sarafan Mobile, a photo app developer from Chile, announced on the X platform that their app was deemed a violation by Apple’s risk control system due to malicious manipulation from their competitors. This incident has had a significant impact on Sarafan Mobile, as not only has their developer account been deleted by Apple, but the company’s revenue has also been frozen for three months, totaling $108,878 (approximately 778,000 RMB).
According to investigations, the cause of this controversy is a counterfeit app with a similar name and identical logo to Sarafan Mobile’s app being listed on the App Store by their competitors. The counterfeit app only contains advertisements, whereas the genuine Sarafan Mobile app is a popular photo editing tool. The competitors also promoted the counterfeit app on platforms such as Instagram to attract consumers to download it. What’s even worse is that they manipulated the ratings on the iOS platform to give the counterfeit app and the legitimate app fake five-star reviews, which ultimately led to Sarafan Mobile’s developer account being banned by Apple’s risk control system.

The founder of Sarafan Mobile expressed extreme anger and disappointment over this incident. He stated that their company has always operated with integrity, winning the trust of users through innovation and high-quality services. However, this incident has caused them significant economic and reputational damage. In order to resolve this issue, Sarafan Mobile has hired a lawyer to file a claim against Apple, and hopes to resolve the matter through friendly negotiations. Their demands include the restoration of their developer account, the release of the frozen $108,878 funds, and some form of economic compensation.
This incident serves as a reminder for developers to remain vigilant and guard against malicious attacks and manipulation from their competitors. It also highlights the importance of platform responsibility. As the managers of the app store, Apple needs to rigorously review and manage the apps that are listed to ensure the safety and rights of users. Of course, consumers also need to learn how to discern between genuine and counterfeit apps to avoid any losses.
