【Mobile China News】According to DSCC, driven by the launch of Samsung Z Fold5 and Z Flip5, as well as the introduction and continued growth of many other foldable smartphones (mainly in China), the sales of foldable smartphones in the third quarter of this year (July to September) reached a historic high.

Compared to the second quarter, the sales of foldable devices in the third quarter of 2023 increased by 215%, an increase of 16% compared to the third quarter of 2022, reaching 7 million units, surpassing the peak of 6.1 million units in the same period last year.

Among them, Samsung has a market share of 72%, occupying a dominant position, but it has decreased compared to last year’s 86%. Huawei ranks second with a market share of 9%. Honor follows with a market share of 8%. Samsung has two best-selling foldable screen phones – Z Flip5 with 45% market share and Fold5 with 24% market share. Huawei Mate X3 and Honor Magic V2 each have a 6% market share.

DSCC expects that the sales of foldable smartphones in the fourth quarter (October to December) will decrease by 35% compared to the third quarter, and an increase of 47% compared to the fourth quarter of 2022. This is because Samsung’s shipments are lower than expected and new product launches are delayed. Samsung’s brand share is expected to decrease to 42%, far below last year’s 83%, due to lower-than-expected shipments of Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5.

It is expected that Huawei and Honor will occupy important shares in the fourth quarter of 2023, with Huawei’s share soaring to 21% and Honor reaching 19%. After Z Flip 5, Mate X5 is expected to rise to second place with a 15% share, while Z Flip 5 has a 22% share. Honor Magic V2 is expected to rise to third place, while Samsung Z Fold 5 will fall to fourth place with a 12% share.

In the whole year of 2023, foldable smartphone sales are expected to increase by 23% compared to 2022, reaching 15.8 million units. The top five models in terms of annual sales rankings are Z Flip5, Z Fold5, Z Flip4, Honor Magic V2, and Huawei Mate X5.
