Apple has been in China for 30 years, and deepening its presence in the Chinese market is not just empty talk
Apple has been in China for 30 years and is actively expanding in the Chinese market
Perhaps most people became familiar with Apple through hardware products such as Mac, iPod, and iPhone. However, what you may not know is that Apple entered the Chinese market earlier than we might imagine. In 1993, 30 years ago, Apple established an office in Beijing. At that time, Apple had not yet entered the consumer market, so it was not well known by the public.
As more and more hardware products entered the consumer market, “Apple” began to enter more and more households. Apple’s continuous cultivation of the Chinese market has also brought it great benefits. A report by the analysis firm TechInsights shows that the Chinese market surpassed the United States for the first time in the second quarter of this year, becoming the largest single market for iPhone shipments. At the same time, the perfect user experience built around the Apple ecosystem has created a unique “moat” for Apple.
Of course, “cultivating the Chinese market” is not just about bringing more products to Chinese users. In the 30 years since entering China, Apple’s education and innovation work in China is also worth noting. Apple has repeatedly stated that “education is in Apple’s DNA” and firmly believes that education is a method that can change people’s destinies.

When it comes to “education,” it naturally involves a large group of students. From Apple’s actions in the education field over the years, it can be seen that Apple hopes to empower people through products, cultivate interests through technology and products, and unleash potential creativity. At the same time, Apple also collaborates with domestic universities, allowing students from all over the country to participate through the organization of competitions.
The mobile application innovation competition jointly organized by Apple and Zhejiang University is one of the results of this collaboration. As the scale and impact of the mobile application innovation competition continue to grow, more and more students are participating in the competition. From initially targeting universities to now covering vocational colleges and K-12, this platform has sparked creative ideas among students of different age groups.
Wang Zhenyang from the School of Computer Science at Zhejiang University
In my opinion, the Mobile Application Innovation Competition is not only a platform for students to exchange programming and creative ideas, but also provides more students with new possibilities for the future. Wang Zhenyang, from the School of Computer Science at Zhejiang University, is one of them. In the 2021 Mobile Application Innovation Competition, he and his team designed an app called “Wei Er”, which helps users focus on mental health by using the image of a virtual electronic pet. Subsequently, the app won the first prize and the Most Innovative Award in the Mobile Application Innovation Competition.
For Wang Zhenyang, winning this award is a strong motivation for their team, especially as students. Winning in the Mobile Application Innovation Competition not only allowed them to successfully secure venture capital, but also gave them a hot start-up opportunity.
Wu Qi, from the Design Department at Zhejiang University, is also one of the beneficiaries. As a seal carving enthusiast, she and her team members created “Seal Create” during the Mobile Application Innovation Competition. This app allows users to simulate brush and knife carving to make seals using an iPad and Apple Pencil. In the 2020 Mobile Application Innovation Competition, this app won the Most Innovative Award and received a prize money of over one hundred thousand yuan.

Participating in the Mobile Application Innovation Competition is just the beginning. At this year’s Hangzhou Asian Games, the related products developed by Wu Qi and her team will also be stationed in the Asian Games Village and provide smart seal carving experience services to all athletes, media, and staff. This event, aimed at a wide range of students, is helping more and more students discover their new possibilities. Based on this, we also see the beautiful vision of Apple’s “Everyone Can Code, Everyone Can Innovate.”
While helping students access high-quality education, Apple has also extended education to a broader user base. As early as last year, Apple announced a $50 million investment in a supplier employee education fund, which has had a positive impact on the industry by providing educational opportunities for supply chain employees.
The Apple Smart Education Center established at Zhejiang University is one of the landing projects of the “Supplier Employee Education Fund.” This education center is somewhat similar to a place for training teachers. Supply chain mentors can participate in training online and offline, and share the knowledge they have learned with more supply chain employees.
For many supply chain employees, the Apple Smart Education Center is also a window for them to understand cutting-edge technology. Here, they can be exposed to cutting-edge mechanical manufacturing, programming, as well as hygiene and health courses. Ge Yue, Vice President and Managing Director of Greater China at Apple, also stated that Apple has helped people establish connections and unleash their creativity in the process of developing the Chinese market. Looking forward, the possibilities brought by innovation will still be endless.
Jiang Xiuhai operates industrial robots to complete grabbing, moving, and other tasks.
In the manufacturing field, more and more factories are introducing automated production lines to improve efficiency, which also requires more automation engineers to operate industrial robots. Jiang Xiuhai from Jiangsu Kecheng Technology actively signed up for the internal trainer program for industrial robots organized by Kecheng Technology and Apple. Through training, he comprehensively learned the operation, debugging, and programming techniques of industrial robots from various brands.
Jiang Xiuhai also specifically mentioned when sharing with us that through participating in the course, he understands that teaching is not just a one-way transmission of knowledge and skills, but more importantly, it is about inspiring students’ interest, guiding them to actively participate and explore, and continuously improving their skills through practice. After the training, Jiang Xiuhai also redesigned the course content and teaching methods, making the course more suitable for students’ needs, and more interesting and practical.
From the annual Mobile Application Innovation Competition to the establishment of the Apple Zhuhui Education Center at Zhejiang University, these actions show us Apple’s attention to the local market. Through a series of educational and social projects, we also see Apple’s long-term support for the next generation and supplier employees in the field of education.
As Apple has repeatedly mentioned, “Education is in Apple’s DNA.” This long-term investment also has significant positive significance for Apple, and we look forward to seeing more achievements in education that can help more people in need.
