Global smartphone production reached 270 million units in Q2 Transsion replaced vivo and entered the top five
【Phoneauto News】On September 4th, Phoneauto learned that according to the research by TrendForce, following a nearly 20% year-on-year decrease in global smartphone production in the first quarter, production continued to decline by about 6.6% in the second quarter, reaching only 270 million units. The total smartphone production in the first half of 2023 was 520 million units, a 13.3% decline compared to the same period last year. Whether it is individual quarters or the first half of the year as a whole, it has set a record low in a decade. It is worth mentioning that Transsion has surpassed Vivo to enter the global top five, with a growth rate of over 70% in the second quarter.
In terms of production rankings of various brands, the most significant change in the second quarter was that Transsion surpassed Vivo and entered the global top five for the first time, with a growth rate of over 70% and a production volume of 25.10 million units. TrendForce analysis shows that the reason for Transsion’s high production is due to channel inventory replenishment, new product launches, and entry into the mid-to-high-end market. Since March, it has performed quite well in production, and it is estimated that this wave of growth will continue into the third quarter. Due to the global economic downturn, Vivo (including Vivo and iQoo) takes a conservative view of market demand in the second half of the year, which is also reflected in production planning. The second-quarter production volume was 23 million units, a 15% increase compared to the previous quarter, dropping to sixth place globally.
Samsung still ranks first in production, with a total production volume of 53.90 million units in the second quarter, a decrease of 12.4% compared to the previous quarter. Influenced by competitors and the global economic headwinds, as well as the fading halo of Samsung’s flagship phones in the first half of the year, the production performance in the second quarter was not as good as the same period last year.

In addition, Apple’s production volume in the second quarter was 42 million units, a decrease of 21.2% compared to the previous quarter. Xiaomi’s production volume in the second quarter was about 35 million units, an increase of 32.1% compared to the previous quarter. Compared to other brands, Xiaomi’s channel inventory is still high, and the production plan for the third quarter is expected to remain at the same level as the second quarter. OPPO’s production volume in the second quarter was about 33.60 million units, an increase of 25.4% compared to the previous quarter, mainly due to the recovery of demand in Southeast Asia and other regions.
