LCD is going away? Samsung plans to equip entry-level models with OLED screens next year.
Is LCD on its way out? Samsung set to introduce OLED screens in entry-level models in the coming year.
【Mobile China News】Due to the continuously decreasing production cost of OLED panels, OLED screens, which were previously only found on high-end models, are increasingly appearing on mid-range smartphones. As a major producer of OLED screens, Samsung is planning to take it a step further. According to foreign media reports, Samsung plans to use OLED screens on its entry-level A1 series models next year.
According to reports from Han coal today, Samsung Electronics plans to use OLED screens on the low-end smartphone A15, which may be released in the first half of next year. If the Samsung A15 uses an OLED screen, it will be the first model in the A1 series to adopt OLED technology. The latest A14 model released this year still features an LCD screen. Samsung’s A series and other mid-range smartphones mainly use RIGD OLED screens with glass substrates, while flexible OLED screens with polyimide (PI) substrates are mainly used for the S series and Apple iPhone and other high-end smartphones. Recently, as Chinese panel companies sell flexible OLED at low prices, the demand for Samsung OLED screens has also decreased.
To address the issue of excess production capacity, Samsung used OLED screens on the A24 model belonging to the A2 series this year. Its predecessor, the A23, used an LCD screen. Initially, the A24 was also planned to use an LCD screen, but the plans changed when Leged OLED was adopted. It is understood that the vertical OLED used in Samsung A15 is expected to start production from the fourth quarter. Samsung’s A15 production plan has a large quantity, which is expected to help improve the operating rate of Samsung’s A2 Readed OLED production line.
The A2 Leged OLED production line mainly produces OLED screens for mid-range smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other devices. Samsung’s mid-range smartphones and some domestic smartphones have been using OLED screens produced by the A2 line. However, due to the recent downturn in the smartphone industry and the low-price strategy of Chinese panel companies for flexible OLED, the operating rate of the A2 line has decreased. Nevertheless, since the equipment of the A2 line has already paid off, it can produce OLED screens at a lower price and use them in entry-level models.
