Samsung plans to launch a scrollable screen smartphone in 2025, possibly alongside the Fold 7
【PhoneAuto News】According to reports, Samsung plans to launch a scrollable screen smartphone in 2025. According to industry insider @Tech_Reve, the device may be equipped with an under-display camera (UPC) and adopt a borderless design. The product is currently unnamed.
It is said that after foldable screen phones, the next step in the development of smartphones will be rollable or slidable phones. Several companies are exploring this design, and some have publicly showcased prototypes and concept devices. Samsung has been considering this idea for the past few years.
This Korean company has obtained patents for various scrollable and slidable smartphone designs. Meanwhile, its display division, Samsung Display, has introduced several large-sized OLED panels that can be rolled up and packed into small packages when not in use. In May of this year, Samsung showcased a similar solution at the 2023 SID Display Week held in California.

This OLED panel is called Rollable Flex and has a length of 254.4mm when fully expanded. However, when rolled up, the entire screen can be hidden within a 49mm package, providing 5 times the expandability. It addresses the portability issue of large-screen devices. Current foldable smartphones offer only 3 times expandability or even less.
Samsung rollable screen smartphone patent
However, Samsung has not disclosed the commercial availability of Rollable Flex as a smartphone. In fact, this is not within their responsibility and is handled by Samsung’s mobile division (referred to as MX or Mobile Experience).
According to new rumors, Samsung will begin mass production of its first-generation rollable screen smartphone in 2025. The insider did not reveal a more precise release date, but this device may be launched around August together with the company’s foldable phones, Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7. Of course, if Samsung plans to provide more space in the market for the new rollable product, it may arrive earlier or later than that time.
In addition to the new rollable screen, Samsung is also committed to improving its UPC technology. Since the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in 2021, Samsung has been using an under-display camera on its Fold series foldable phones. However, after two years, the image quality is still poor, although there have been some improvements, but not much. I wonder if there will be any changes in the coming years.
