Apple has released a new patent for a folding screen that provides screen protection when dropped

【Phoneauto News】Currently, most mainstream mobile phone manufacturers have launched their own foldable screen phones, except for Apple. However, there are signs indicating that Apple will also release a foldable screen phone. On September 5th, Phoneauto noticed that the Tianyancha App showed that Apple has applied for a patent titled “Electronic Device with Durable Foldable Display”. This patent allows the device to slightly fold around a bending axis when dropped or subjected to vibrations, thereby helping to prevent the display from impacting a hard surface when fully open.

In addition, the abstract and description of the patent show that the foldable display in this patent bends around a bending axis, and the display panel has a pixel array that can display images from the display cover layer. The display cover layer is formed by a glass layer, which forms a concave portion along the bending axis in the glass layer. The concave portion allows the glass layer to bend around the bending axis with a flexible local thinning portion formed in the glass layer.

The abstract also shows that to ensure better impact resistance when the display cover layer is dropped, the corners and other edge portions of the cover layer are thicker. In addition, the display hinge and other structures can help keep the display flat when unfolded normally, and can slightly fold around the bending axis when the device is dropped or subjected to vibrations, thereby helping to prevent the display from impacting a hard surface when fully open.
