Huawei's expected foldable screen smartphone shipments this year are around 25 million units, placing them in second position
【Phoneauto News】On September 13th, Phoneauto learned that according to TrendForce’s research, the estimated shipment volume of foldable phones in 2023 is about 18.3 million units, with a year-on-year increase of 43%, accounting for only 16% of the smartphone market this year. The shipment volume in 2024 is expected to grow by another 38%, reaching about 25.2 million units, and the proportion will slightly expand to 2.2%. TrendForce pointed out that Huawei’s foldable phone shipment volume is estimated to be about 2.5 million units this year.
In addition, TrendForce believes that the expansion of the foldable phone market mainly relies on the reduction of component costs and the expansion of Chinese brands. In terms of components, if the cost of panels and hinges can be reduced, it will determine whether the retail price of foldable phones can stabilize below $1,000 in the future, thereby attracting and enhancing consumer willingness to purchase. In the medium to long term, the continuous expansion of the foldable phone market is imperative. The shipment volume is expected to reach 70 million units, accounting for about 5% of the smartphone market in 2027.
In terms of brands, Samsung is still the leader in foldable phones this year, with estimated shipments expected to grow to 12.5 million units. However, its market share in the foldable phone market has dropped from 82% in 2022 to 68%, mainly due to the rapid growth of foldable phones from other Chinese brands. Huawei ranks second, with an estimated shipment volume of about 2.5 million units this year and a market share of about 14%. OPPO and Xiaomi follow closely with market shares of 5% and 4% respectively. Other brands have market shares of less than 4%.

It is worth mentioning that TrendForce believes that Apple’s moves are another key factor. So far, Apple has shown little interest in foldable phones, which is indeed a negative factor for boosting the sales of foldable phones. However, Apple has always insisted on the user experience of its products. Due to the shortcomings in panel flatness and hinge design of foldable phones, it is one of the reasons why Apple is reluctant to enter the foldable phone market. However, for medium and large-sized products, it is easier to maintain the flatness of foldable panels compared to smaller-sized products. It is not ruled out that Apple may directly develop towards medium-sized laptops or tablet computers in the future.
