Is it cheating? Mercedes-Benz has been accused of using cheating devices to bypass Euro 6 emission standards

Mercedes-Benz accused of cheating on Euro 6 emissions standards

【Phoneauto News】Recently, a news shocked the automotive industry: the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) discovered three software-based “defeat devices” on the OM642 diesel engine of the Mercedes-Benz E350 BlueTec model. These devices were accused of enabling Mercedes-Benz to bypass the latest Euro 6 emission standards.

In July 2022, the European Court ruled that software-based cheating devices were illegal, and the German Federal Motor Transport Authority conducted additional inspections on the Mercedes-Benz E350 BlueTec. The agency required Mercedes-Benz to address these issues by July 27th. However, according to foreign media reports, Mercedes-Benz has obtained an extension.

According to foreign media reports, this is not the first time that the German environmental organization has inspected Mercedes-Benz. As early as 2020, the US Environmental Protection Agency, the California Air Resources Board, and the US Department of Justice fined Mercedes-Benz nearly $3 billion for emission issues. In November 2021, the German environmental organization DUH also released a public report accusing Mercedes-Benz of using eight “defeat devices” in its E-Class vehicles equipped with the Euro 6-compliant OM642 diesel engine. These devices are considered illegal and reduce the required AdBlue injection for neutralizing harmful nitrogen oxides.

The exposure of this incident undoubtedly puts tremendous pressure and challenges on Mercedes-Benz, which has always touted itself as environmentally friendly. It also raises concerns and doubts about whether automotive manufacturers have engaged in improper behavior regarding environmental standards. In the future, we look forward to Mercedes-Benz actively addressing and taking effective measures to ensure that its products comply with environmental regulations and standards, making positive contributions to the sustainable development of the automotive industry.
