The forecasted sales volume for foldable smartphones this year is 164 million units, growing by 28% compared to the previous year

【Phoneauto News】 On September 6th, Phoneauto learned that market research firm DSC currently predicts that there will be 36 different foldable phones on the market in 2023, compared to only 19 in 2022. However, due to delays in certain products and lower-than-expected sales of some products, as well as a sluggish smartphone market, DSCC has lowered its forecast for foldable panels in 2023 by 21% to 2.01 million units, still a year-on-year growth of 33%; the forecast for foldable phones has been lowered by 15% to 16.4 million units, with a year-on-year growth of 28%.

The DSC report pointed out that although Samsung is the leading brand in the foldable market, its market share is expected to decrease from 79% in 2022 to 59% in 2023 as other brands penetrate the foldable market. Honor and OPPO are expected to each account for 8% of the market share, higher than 1% and 3% in 2022, respectively, while Motorola’s share is expected to increase from 1% in 2022 to 4% in 2023, jumping to fifth place.

The report also points out that Samsung Display will still be the main supplier of foldable panels, but its market share is expected to decrease from 82% in 2022 to 69% in 2023, with a growth rate of 12%. BOE’s market share is expected to rise rapidly in 2023, increasing from 13% in 2022 to 25% in 2023, a growth of 157%. This is thanks to BOE securing orders for small foldable devices from brands such as OPPO and vivo, thus grabbing market share from SDC. With further penetration of internal foldable projects, BOE’s market share is expected to continue to rise.
