'2023 Mobile App Innovation Competition Changing Life with Creativity, Everyone Can Do It'
Among the vast developer community, student developers are an indispensable reserve force, and the annual “Mobile Application Innovation Competition” is not only an excellent stage for student developers to showcase their technology, but also allows us to see the creativity and thinking of different student developers. This year is the eighth year of the “Mobile Application Innovation Competition”. Public information shows that a total of 891 students from universities in Greater China and overseas participated, an increase of 26% compared to last year. Among them, more than 68% are students from non-computer-related majors, an increase of 36% compared to last year.
Mobile Application Innovation Competition
In the impression of many people, programming seems to be a high threshold job. However, with the help of more and more efficient and easy-to-use development tools, as well as the assistance of open source communities, “everyone can code” is becoming a reality. Through the Mobile Application Innovation Competition, more and more non-computer major students are using their creativity to show us more possibilities. This not only adds fun and convenience to users’ lives, but also has a positive impact on the mobile application industry.
As the “Mobile Application Innovation Competition” becomes more well-known among students, more and more non-computer major students are participating in this competition. Three students from Zhejiang University of Technology designed a small game called “I to eye”. Based on the visual characteristics of different animals, it combines the eye filter of different animals in the camera with puzzle games, helping children understand “what the world looks like in the eyes of animals”. At the same time, this app also helps children develop awareness of animal protection and harmonious coexistence with nature while playing, strengthening their connection with nature.

Three students from Zhejiang University of Technology designed a small game called “I to eye”.
After experiencing this app, its UI left a deep impression on me, and it is hard to imagine that this app was completed in just a few months. The three students created a large number of animal and plant icons, and designed different filters after actual investigation. The overall experience is also quite perfect. It is understood that the three students participating in the competition are not computer science majors. They learned programming by themselves and incorporated their understanding of UI design into this app. With the help of their advisor, they finally completed this work.
Adhering to the concept of “everyone can program and innovate”, this year’s Mobile App Innovation Competition also included students in the K-12 track. With their passion for programming, these students designed interesting works using the lower threshold Swift Playgrounds.
A rhythm game designed using Swift Playgrounds
Irene from Shanghai Third Girls’ High School demonstrated a rhythm game she designed using Swift Playgrounds. As a student about to enter the second year of high school, she used her spare time to learn programming and completed this work with the help of her school’s advisor. In the process of communication, I also found that the younger generation is more driven by their interests. They do not necessarily think that they have to pursue programming or computer-related careers in the future. They only joined the programming field because they discovered their interest in programming after understanding it.
Swift Playgrounds can be easily picked up for programming.
Similarly, the development tools within the Apple ecosystem are also helping the next generation of young people get started easily. Now you don’t even need to use a Mac, just an iPad and download the free Swift Playgrounds from the App Store, and you can start programming.
For those who are new to programming, the various mini-games prepared in Swift Playgrounds can allow everyone to understand the principles of programming through a visualized manner. And thanks to its integrated and comprehensive programming environment, once you understand how to use the code, you can also directly complete programming in Swift Playgrounds. It can be said that this is a more lightweight version of Xcode.
At this year’s WWDC23 conference, Apple’s first VR device, Apple Vision Pro, became the focus of the audience, and programming development in the AR field also became a hot topic.
In this year’s Mobile App Innovation Competition, three students from the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education designed an app that combines AR and video calls. It provides visual and interactive remote support and solves various problems in life by adding AR scanning. For example, when helping someone remotely use a tool, you can improve communication efficiency by adding AR components such as arrows and circles on the screen.
Adding AR components to videos to improve communication efficiency
It is said that “technology serves people”, and the students from the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education chose to integrate “video calls” and “AR”, which not only provides us with innovative ideas, but also solves the barriers of remote communication between people from a practical perspective.
Capturing user hand movements through ARKit and providing corresponding sensory responses
Three students from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications have provided a new accessible interaction method in the “Yao Yi” app. This app uses the camera to recognize the multilingual instructions on medicine packaging boxes, and combines it with user information analysis through a local predictive model to provide correct dosage guidelines.
In the process of designing this app, the three students also adopted many new technologies. Through SceneKit in ARKit, the app can capture the user’s hand movements and provide corresponding sensory feedback when the finger points to the medicine. At the same time, developers also used widely discussed language models and localized them to ensure that the app can provide feedback to user’s voice commands in real time.
So far, the Mobile App Innovation Competition has been successfully held for eight years, providing opportunities for up to 50,000 students to create and realize their mobile dreams. And during these eight years, the competition itself has allowed more and more college students to explore their own possibilities through programming.
In fact, programming is not just a technical job, but also a way of innovation and creation. The young generation of student developers use programming as a tool to explore their creativity and thinking, and realize their own mobile app dreams. This concept of “programming innovation for everyone” has also opened the door to programming for more people, giving them the opportunity to discover more fun and innovation through programming.
