vivo to launch world's first rollable screen smartphone in collaboration with Sound Transmission Program, expected next year
【phoneauto News】According to reports, vivo and Transsion plan to launch the world’s first rollable screen smartphone. Transsion had previously released a rollable screen concept phone in September last year.
Industry insiders said on the 9th that Chinese smartphone companies such as vivo and Transsion are actively developing rollable screen phones and plan to launch them before the end of next year. A rollable screen phone refers to a smartphone with a screen that can partially expand. Pressing the operation button will reveal the hidden part of the screen, making the screen larger accordingly.
Last September, Transsion launched a rollable screen concept phone called Techno Phantom Ultimate. When the button on the top of the product is pressed, the 6.55-inch screen expands rapidly to 7.11 inches in 1.2 to 1.3 seconds. The screen has a resolution of 2296×1596 pixels and a PPI of 388, providing 100% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage. In addition, the back of the phone is equipped with a small screen that can be used as a display when the phone is in standby mode. The back cover has a striped anti-slip design, providing a better grip.

It is understood that the rollable screen panels of vivo are likely to be supplied by BOE or Samsung Display. The industry estimates that BOE may be more actively supplying rollable screen panels for vivo.
It is speculated that Chinese smartphone companies are actively developing rollable screen phones because they realize it is difficult to surpass Samsung in the foldable phone market. Samsung is also developing various form factors, such as rollable screen phones, but currently it needs to focus on expanding the foldable phone market. If Samsung Electronics launches a rollable screen phone, the functions that should have been concentrated on foldable phones may be diluted.
It is worth mentioning that Samsung is not the first company in the world to launch a foldable smartphone. As early as 2019, Samsung Electronics released the first generation foldable smartphone Galaxy Fold. And about a year ago, China’s Royole Corporation launched the world’s first foldable smartphone “FlexPai”.
