Apple loses lawsuit and needs to compensate users with nearly 500,000 Korean won due to intentionally reducing phone performance.
Apple ordered to pay nearly 500,000 Korean won in damages to users after losing lawsuit for deliberate slowdown of phone performance.
【Mobile China News】On December 6th, Mobile China noticed that according to a report by “Phoenix Finance,” the Seoul High Court in South Korea has ruled that Apple must compensate seven Korean iPhone users with 70,000 Korean won each (about 380 Chinese yuan), totaling around 500,000 Korean won. The reason for this ruling is that Apple intentionally reduced the performance of devices through software updates, which is considered a violation of user rights.

This controversy, known as “Batterygate,” dates back to the end of 2017. At that time, there were accusations that Apple deliberately hindered the performance of certain iPhone models to prolong device battery life. These allegations triggered widespread user lawsuits, ultimately leading to this ruling by the South Korean High Court.
Over 62,000 Korean iPhone users sued Apple, accusing the company of intentionally slowing down the performance of older phones after software updates to force users to buy new ones. These users believe that Apple’s actions violated consumer protection laws and demanded compensation.

After a series of trials, the South Korean High Court made the aforementioned ruling on December 6th, requiring Apple to compensate seven representative users with 70,000 Korean won each. Although the compensation amount is relatively small, this ruling cannot be ignored in terms of its impact on Apple’s business. It demonstrates consumers’ increasingly strict scrutiny of the actions of technology companies and emphasizes the responsibility of companies in protecting user rights.
