Apple to Introduce Enhanced Security Mode for iPhone to Combat Password Theft
[Mobile China News] On December 13th, Mobile China learned that Apple will introduce a new security mode for the iPhone, which can protect users when thieves or other attackers know their private passwords. If the phone is in a location that is not typically associated with its owner and the “stolen device protection” feature is enabled, the device will require Apple’s Face ID facial recognition as well as a password for the user to perform sensitive operations such as viewing stored passwords or erasing the phone.
This new feature is introduced after the media discovered a scam in which attackers typically meet or monitor victims in bars at night to reveal their passwords. The attackers then steal the phone and use the stolen password to disable anti-theft protection features like Apple’s activation lock or lost mode. A stolen iPhone that can still be used normally is more valuable than an iPhone locked through software, which typically needs to be sold as spare parts.
It is understood that the stolen device mode can be enabled in Face ID and Password > Stolen device protection, and is applicable to users with the latest developer beta version of iOS, namely iOS 17.3. This feature will be rolled out to other iPhone users in the coming weeks with iOS 17.3.

An Apple spokesperson said in a statement, “As threats to user devices continue to evolve, we are constantly working to develop strong new protection measures for users and their data. iPhone data encryption has always led the industry, preventing thieves from accessing data on a stolen iPhone without knowing the user’s password. In rare cases, thieves can observe the user entering their password and then steal the device. Stolen device protection adds an additional layer of complex protection.”
