Chengdu has the highest number of cars in China, surpassing Beijing, but why is there no traffic congestion like in Beijing?

Chengdu has more cars than Beijing, but no traffic congestion Why?

【Phoneauto News】Today, the data released by the Ministry of Public Security shows that as of the end of September 2023, the total number of motor vehicles in the country reached 430 million, including 330 million cars and 18.21 million new energy vehicles; there are 520 million motor vehicle drivers, including 480 million car drivers.

Urban Traffic Congestion

The data shows that in urban areas across the country, a total of 90 cities have more than 1 million cars, among which 25 cities, including Chengdu, Beijing, and Chongqing, have more than 3 million cars. Chengdu, Beijing, and Chongqing have over 6 million cars, with Chengdu surpassing Beijing to become the city with the highest number of motor vehicles in the country.

In the subconscious minds of many people, the more motor vehicles there are, the more congested the city will become, and the more serious the traffic congestion will be. However, the data shows that compared to Beijing, Chengdu does not have as severe traffic congestion. In Baidu Maps’ ranking of commuting peak-hour congestion in the second quarter of 2023, Beijing ranked first, while Chengdu ranked 11th. During the commuting peak hours, the average speed of vehicles in Beijing was 24.27 km/h, while in Chengdu it was 31.71 km/h. Why is this?

Jiemian News reveals the answer. It is because the population density in the main urban areas of Beijing is higher than that of Chengdu. Over 90% of the population in Beijing (except for Yanqing, Huairou, Miyun, and Pinggu) lives on only 55% of the land area; while in Chengdu, 90% of the population (except for Jianyang and Pengzhou) occupies approximately 75% of the land area, so the distribution of people and cars is more dispersed. The road network density in Chengdu is also higher than that in Beijing. According to a report released by the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design in June this year, the road network density in Chengdu is 8.6 km/square kilometer, while in Beijing it is only 5.9 km/square kilometer. A higher road network density means that cars have more routes to take, reducing the probability of traffic congestion.

Finally, another point is that many residents who live and work near Chengdu are worried about future restrictions on vehicle purchases due to the large number of vehicles in Chengdu. As a result, they have also chosen to register their vehicle license plates in Chengdu. However, most of the time, they do not actually drive in Chengdu, so this has to some extent reduced traffic congestion in the city.
