Chinese Expert: There is still a long way to go for 6G to be implemented, with three key factors to follow

Wen Ku, the chairman of the China Communications Standards Association, stated that there is still a long way to go for 6G to be implemented. The follow-up actions include: firstly, conducting a comprehensive assessment of 6G technology and verifying key technologies, as not all technologies can reach the final stage; secondly, ensuring smooth transition between 6G and 5G by strengthening the infrastructure of 5G and advancing 5G-A towards commercialization, while incorporating potential 6G technologies into the 5G-A standard in advance; thirdly, increasing efforts in technological innovation, strengthening open cooperation, and actively inviting international companies to participate in China’s 6G research and development.

6G communication technology mainly covers four aspects (air interface technology, network architecture technology, green energy-saving technology, wireless artificial intelligence technology), with a total of 19 underlying technological branches.

As of now, there have been over 70,000 patent applications related to 6G communication technology globally, with approximately 28,000 patent applications from China, accounting for 39.8% of the total, followed by the United States with over 17,000 patent applications, accounting for 24.7%. South Korea ranks third (8,989 applications, 13%), followed by Japan (8,016 applications, 11%) and Europe (6,670 applications, 9%). Qualcomm, based in the United States, holds 3,988 relevant patent applications, ranking first globally, followed by Huawei with 3,435 relevant patent applications, ranking second globally. LG Electronics from South Korea (3,140 applications), Samsung from South Korea (2,580 applications), and Ericsson from Sweden (1,540 applications) are among the top-ranked companies.
