The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Tunnel mainline, boasting eight lanes in each direction, is now officially open. Its full completion is scheduled for 2024.

【PhoneAuto News】Recently, the Ministry of Transportation announced that the mainline of the Super Project Deep-Mid Bay Area Tunnel in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area has officially been completed on November 28th. This important progress signifies a crucial step towards the project’s goal of being open for traffic next year. It is understood that the Deep-Mid Bay Area Tunnel is an eight-lane, dual-carriageway with a designed speed of 100 kilometers per hour. The plan is to have it completed and open for traffic by 2024. At that time, the journey between Shenzhen and Zhongshan will be shortened to about 20 minutes, compared to the current 2-hour journey.

The Deep-Mid Bay Area Tunnel is a core transportation hub project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. It spans a total length of 24 kilometers and combines “bridge, island, tunnel, and underwater interchanges” in one. The construction of this tunnel will effectively alleviate traffic pressure at the mouth of the Pearl River and promote interconnection within the urban agglomeration of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. In June of this year, the undersea immersed tube of the Deep-Mid Bay Area Tunnel was successfully connected at the Lingdingyang seabed, thanks to the hard work and meticulous planning of the builders. Subsequently, they completed the pouring of all the pressure chamber concrete inside the tube, laying a solid foundation for the final completion of the tunnel.

The construction of the Deep-Mid Bay Area Tunnel not only shortens the distance between cities but also complements other cross-sea and cross-river channels such as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, Nansha Bridge, and Humen Bridge, collectively forming a group of cross-sea and cross-river channels in the Greater Bay Area. The completion of this group of channels will further promote the economic and social development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area and enhance the comprehensive competitiveness of the urban agglomeration. With the completion of the mainline of the Deep-Mid Bay Area Tunnel, the next phase of construction will enter its final sprint. It is believed that with the joint efforts of all the builders, the Deep-Mid Bay Area Tunnel will be completed as scheduled and make positive contributions to the prosperity and development of the Greater Bay Area.
