Ford General dismisses non-striking employees due to the strike

【phoneauto News】Starting from last Thursday local time, the United Auto Workers (UAW) announced simultaneous strikes at Ford, General Motors, and STELLANTIS, demanding improved wages and benefits. In response, Ford and General Motors also announced that they would lay off some non-striking employees.

As the previous agreement expired on Thursday, September 14th at 11:59 PM local time, and UAW failed to reach a new labor agreement with the companies, UAW organized strikes involving 13,000 employees from the three aforementioned automakers. In response, Ford and General Motors announced layoffs of non-striking employees. Ford stated that it laid off 600 workers at its Wayne facility in Michigan, while General Motors said it may lay off up to 2,000 workers starting this week.

Ford stated that since its car production is interconnected among different factories, when one factory goes on strike, it affects other factories as well. For example, there have been reports of workers at its body assembly plant being laid off because the components they assemble require an electronic coating typically used in the factory’s paint department. Due to the participation of paint department workers in the strike, the subsequent supply and demand could not proceed, which became the reason for Ford’s layoffs.

In a recent statement, General Motors stated, “Unfortunately, UAW leadership has chosen to strike at our Wentzville Assembly Plant, and this has had a negative chain reaction, with General Motors’ Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas and its 2,000 team members expected to halt production as early as next week.”

UAW President Sean Fein issued a statement on Saturday morning, saying, “Let’s be clear: if the Big Three automakers decide to fire those who did not participate in the strike, it is an attempt to pressure our striking members and force them to meet their previous demands. With their record-breaking profits, they do not need to lay off any employees. In fact, they can double the wages of every automotive worker without raising car prices and still make billions of dollars.”
