Rumors About MediaTek Securing Apple's Wi-Fi Chip Orders Are False, Claims Guo Mingchi
[Mobile China News] On December 15th, Mobile China noticed that Guo Mingxi, an analyst at Tianfeng International, said that the market rumor about MediaTek receiving Apple iPad Wi-Fi chip orders and expecting shipments in 2024 is not true. MediaTek’s current Wi-Fi orders with Apple are mainly for low-specification devices that require plug-in power, such as Apple TV or other peripheral products, with the earliest shipment expected in 2025 or 2026.
Previously, Taiwan’s “Economic Daily News” reported that next year’s Wi-Fi 7 related products will see a surge, and MediaTek has secured large orders for Wi-Fi 7 from major global tablet leaders, Intel laptop platforms, and major phone manufacturers. This will break Broadcom’s long-standing monopoly in the Wi-Fi chip market. At the same time, there is news that MediaTek has invested in a thousand-person research and development team to make a strong entry into the Wi-Fi 7 market, aiming to surpass some competitors in the Wi-Fi 7 era. Some industry insiders believe that MediaTek will catch up with its competitor Qualcomm and become one of the top three global Wi-Fi chip suppliers.
The source of this rumor may be due to a misunderstanding of MediaTek’s technical capabilities and market share. As a global leader in semiconductor companies, MediaTek has shown outstanding performance in mobile terminals, smart home applications, wireless connectivity technology, and IoT products. Although the company has the ability to provide high-quality Wi-Fi chips, it has not reached any relevant orders with Apple.
