According to Phoneauto, folding screen phones achieved a counter-trend growth last year, with domestic shipments increasing by as much as 154.4%. Recently, JD Mobile released the “2023 Folding Screen Phone Trend and Fun Illustrated Book,” which shows that the starting price of large folding screen phones has dropped by nearly 3,000 yuan from 2021 to 2022. On the JD platform, the sales volume of folding screen phones in the first half of this year has skyrocketed.

The above trend illustrated book shows that the average weight of large folding screen phones has dropped from 289g in 2021 to 251g in 2023, and the average thickness has dropped from 7.3mm to 5.5mm, a decrease of 25%. In addition, the number of folding screen phone products is also increasing, with a nearly 100% year-on-year growth in new models of folding screen phones in 2022.

In terms of price and sales volume that everyone is concerned about, the average starting price of large folding screen phones has dropped from 13,239 yuan in 2021 to 10,277 yuan in 2022, a decrease of nearly 3,000 yuan. As for small folding screen phones, the average starting price has dropped from 8,294 yuan in 2021 to 7,097 yuan in 2022. In 2023, Motorola has even lowered the price of small folding screen phones to 3,999 yuan. In terms of sales volume, according to JD data, the sales volume of folding screen phones on the platform in the first half of 2023 increased by over 100% year-on-year, with the sales volume of small folding screen phones increasing by a staggering 150%.

Phoneauto also learned that the majority of folding screen phone users are currently male. In 2022, over 70% of the users who purchased folding screen phones on JD were male. In addition, young people are the main consumer group of folding screen phones, with users under the age of 35 accounting for 53%.
According to the questionnaire survey, when users purchase foldable screen smartphones, they mainly focus on factors such as screen reliability, screen creases, after-sales service, and price. In addition, potential users of foldable screen smartphones are most concerned about services such as screen insurance, 180-day replacement without repair, and trade-in programs. It is reported that during this year’s 618 shopping festival, the number of orders for purchasing foldable screen smartphones through trade-in programs on the JD platform has increased by more than 7 times compared to the previous year. Phoneauto has learned that JD will launch the 818 Mobile Festival on August 10th, and customers who purchase foldable screen smartphones can enjoy a 180-day replacement without repair service, as well as a trade-in subsidy of up to 1500 yuan.
