Chinese Academy of Engineering's Academician Wu to Unveil 5.5G, Aiming to Complement Rather Than Replace 5G

[Mobile China News] Mobile China has noticed that on December 6th, the 2023 World 5G Conference, co-hosted by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Henan Provincial Government with the theme of “5G Revolution, Co-Creating the Future,” will be held from December 6th to 8th at the Zhengzhou International Convention and Exhibition Center in Zhengzhou, Henan Province.

Chinese Academy of Engineering Academician Wu Hequan said, from 5G to 6G, there will be an intermediate stage of 5.5G, and there is also the process of 5G-A. The goal of 5.5G is to enter full commercial use by 2025. It aims to improve peak performance, connection density, positioning accuracy, and bit efficiency tenfold compared to current 5G. However, it should be noted that 5G-A is not intended to replace 5G. 5G-A is only an upgrade to 5G in terms of functionality and coverage. It does not require full network coverage and only serves as a complement to 5G in hotspot areas, which can save investment.

Academician Wu Hequan further explained: “5G-A requires some innovation in the business model. It can be said that future mass applications in 5G, or those that only require terminal upgrades without network hardware upgrades, can be supported by 5G-A. Of course, users with higher demands may need to use the network of 5G-A, which requires the construction of new base stations. However, it does not mean replacing 5G, but only supplementing 5G in hotspot areas, including future 6G.”
