Geely and NIO Strategically Collaborate on Battery Swapping Business, Expanding to Vehicle Battery Swapping System Operations

【PhoneAuto News】According to PhoneAuto, on November 29th, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., Ltd. (referred to as “Geely”) and NIO Holdings Ltd. (referred to as “NIO”) signed an important strategic cooperation agreement in Hangzhou. The two parties will engage in comprehensive cooperation in multiple areas including battery swapping standards, swapping technology, swapping service network construction and operation, swapping vehicle research and customization, battery asset management and operation, etc. Geely becomes the second company to strategically cooperate with NIO in the battery swapping field, following Changan Automobile.

According to the agreement, NIO and Geely will collaborate through the “joint investment, joint construction, joint sharing, and joint operation” model to effectively cooperate on existing and new stations, building a larger-scale and unified swapping network. It is reported that the main cooperative entity of NIO Power is Yiyi Interconnect Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Geely Holdings, which is a battery swapping company mainly serving the B2B market. This means that after this cooperation, NIO’s battery swapping system will serve both private cars and operational vehicles, in addition to regular users. The two parties will work together to create two major sets of battery swapping standards for private cars and operational vehicles.

Data shows that NIO has built 2,103 battery swapping stations and has over 20,000 charging piles across 306 cities in China. In addition, NIO has led the formulation of three battery swapping industry standards: 10435, 10436, and 33025, and has actively participated in the formulation of two other standards, 10434, and 33004. NIO currently holds more than 1,600 patents related to battery swapping and has been involved in over 20 development of battery swapping standards.

This cooperation between Geely and NIO will undoubtedly inject new vitality into the development of the battery swapping field for new energy vehicles.
