October sees 5% global rise in smartphone sales, marking a significant rebound after a two-year slump.
【Mobile China News】 On November 23rd, Mobile China learned from market research firm Counterpoint Research that global smartphone sales in October 2023 increased by 5% compared to the same month last year. This is the first year-on-year growth since June 2021, breaking the trend of year-on-year decline for 27 consecutive months.
In the past two years, global smartphone sales have been under pressure, due to factors like component shortages, inventory backlog, and extended replacement cycles. The uncertain macroeconomic environment has made these issues more complex.
The growth in October was mainly driven by emerging markets, the continuous recovery in the Middle East and Africa, Huawei’s comeback in China, and India’s entry into the festive season. These factors contributed significantly to the global monthly growth. In contrast, developed markets with high smartphone saturation have shown slower recovery.
- Apple iPhone significantly reduces prices for sales. Second-hand dealers lose 1 million yuan every month.
- Apple will abandon fingerprint recognition technology and fully adopt Face ID for future iPhones.

Another growth factor was the delayed launch of the iPhone 15 series compared to last year. This year’s delay means that the full impact of new iPhone sales was only felt in October.
Counterpoint predicts that after the strong growth in October, the market will continue to recover in the fourth quarter of 2023 with year-on-year growth.
Previously, a report released by Counterpoint showed signs of recovery in the Chinese smartphone market, with an average year-on-year growth of 11% in the first four weeks of October. Huawei became the most prominent brand, occupying the majority of the overall market’s net increase during this period. “Huawei is the most shining brand in October, and the success of its Mate60 series has allowed it to rise against the trend,” said senior manufacturing analyst Ivan Lam.
