Sony's mobile phone sales have encountered a significant decline! The mobile communications department has witnessed a decline of 22% in its sales.
【Mobile China News】 Recently, Sony officially announced its financial performance for the period from July to September 2023. From this financial report, it is evident that the sales of the mobile division, specifically Xperia smartphones, have significantly declined compared to the same period last year.
Sony
According to foreign media reports, Sony’s mobile communications division recorded sales of approximately 7.3 billion yen during this period, a decrease of over 2 billion yen compared to the same period last year, or a decline of approximately 22% year-on-year. As a comparison, the sales of this division during the same period in 2022 decreased by around 5% compared to 2021, indicating a significant expansion in the decline this year.
It is worth noting that these numbers only represent sales figures. In fact, Sony has not disclosed the actual sales or shipment volume of smartphones in recent years. Therefore, it is still unclear how much the sales have actually declined. Foreign media speculates that considering the overall increase in the prices of the 2023 Xperia models compared to previous generations, i.e., an overall increase in average unit price, the decline in unit sales should be much larger than the decline in sales figures. As for the specific decline, foreign media estimates it could be around 30%.

Foreign Media Reports
According to Mobile China’s understanding, the Sony Xperia 1 V has performed better compared to past models in the Xperia 1 series, and the current financial performance hardly includes the Xperia 5 V. Based on this, foreign media suggests that the poor performance of the mid-range Xperia 10 V could be one of the main reasons for this significant decline in sales.
Lastly, foreign media states that it is rumored that the market performance of Sony Xperia 5 V this year is also quite poor. Therefore, the decline in sales for Sony smartphones during the October to December period this year may be even greater compared to the same period last year.
However, Mobile China previously reported on the third-quarter smartphone market data in Japan, where Sony ranked fourth with a market share of 7%, showing a year-on-year growth of 13% in market share.
