China becomes the world’s largest market for foldable smartphones! OPPO puts pressure on Huawei
China now world's biggest foldable smartphone market, OPPO pressures Huawei
【Phoneauto News】Analyst Archie Zhang from Counterpoint predicts that global shipments of foldable smartphones are expected to double to 55 million units between 2022 and 2025, with the Chinese market currently being the largest foldable phone market in the world.
Looking at the current competitive landscape, Huawei, Samsung, and OPPO are the main market leaders, with their models having the highest market share on the best-selling foldable phone list in China. Research firm Counterpoint data shows that OPPO’s market share in the foldable phone market has reached 20% in the first half of this year. Under the watchful eyes of Huawei and Samsung, OPPO has even captured a 31% market share in the small foldable market in the first half of the year, ranking first in this segment. Such achievements have obviously put pressure on Huawei in the high-end market.
Archie Zhang stated that OPPO and Huawei monopolized the top five best-selling foldable phone models in China from January to May 2023, with the top five models accounting for 76% of the overall foldable phone market sales in China. In the future, with the release of more foldable phone models by manufacturers such as Honor, Xiaomi, and Vivo, this segment will enter a more intense competition stage and extend from domestic to overseas markets.

According to the official first-day sales report, the first-day sales revenue of OPPO Find N3 Flip increased by 91% compared to the previous generation, setting a new record for first-day sales volume and revenue in the industry for small foldable phones.
According to IDC data, in 2021, OPPO released the first generation of foldable phone, Find N, and subsequently became the second largest player in the Chinese foldable phone market in the first half of 2022 with a market share of 18.3%, second only to Huawei. By 2022, OPPO released the second generation of foldable phones, Find N2 and Find N2 Flip, and captured the first place in market share in the first quarter of 2023, with the market share of these two models reaching 35.0%.
“Currently, the largest markets for foldable smartphones in the world are China, North America, Europe, and South Korea, collectively accounting for over 80% of the global market in 2022.” Archie Zhang stated that China’s shipment volume of foldable screens has taken the lead with a 26% market share, achieving a year-on-year shipment volume growth of 199% in 2022. It is predicted that Chinese smartphone brands will further seize more market share through overseas expansion.
