Japanese smartphone giant FCNT announced bankruptcy, marking the largest bankruptcy case in Japan this year

FCNT, a Japanese smartphone company, declared bankruptcy, the biggest bankruptcy case in Japan this year

【PhoneAuto News】On May 31st, according to PhoneAuto, the Japanese smartphone manufacturer FCNT, which has a large amount of debt, recently announced bankruptcy. As for why it went bankrupt, FCNT stated that due to the intensifying competition in smartphone sales, coupled with the continuous depreciation of the yen, a global shortage of chips, and other factors, costs soared, which caused a sharp deterioration in profits.

FCNT is not well-known domestically, and many people may not have heard of this brand, but Fujitsu is certainly familiar to everyone. PhoneAuto learned that FCNT is a smartphone manufacturer that became independent from the Fujitsu Group and mainly sells the arrows brand of smartphones. FCNT’s predecessor is the mobile phone business unit of Fujitsu Corporation, which began operations in 2000, mainly providing planning, development, sales, maintenance of mobile phone terminals, as well as SNS services for the elderly.

It is reported that the objects of the bankruptcy application this time include not only FCNT, but also FCNT’s parent company REINOWA Holdings and the smartphone manufacturing subsidiary Japan EMSolutions (JEMS). Foreign media pointed out that the above three companies were established in January 2018 by Fujitsu to operate the mobile phone business when it sold the business to the investment fund Polaris Capital Group. FCNT will become Japan’s first bankrupt smartphone manufacturer.

A Japanese credit investigation company pointed out that the total debt of the above three companies is approximately 143.106 billion yen (about 7.28 billion yuan). Among them, FCNT’s debt is about 73.36 billion yen, JEMS is about 36.79 billion yen, and REINOWA Holdings is about 32.956 billion yen. This also sets the record for Japan’s largest bankruptcy case this year.

PhoneAuto observed that Japan’s domestic smartphone brands seem to be struggling in the era of smartphones. Previously, Kyocera also announced that it will withdraw from the consumer smartphone market by the end of March 2025.
