Indian official lost job after dropping phone into reservoir and pumping out 21 million liters of water

【PhoneAuto News】What would you do if your phone fell into a reservoir? Most people would give up and just buy a new phone. Who would bother to pump out the water and retrieve the phone? Well, an Indian official did exactly that.

According to “Today India”, a government official in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh dropped his phone into a reservoir while taking a selfie. After local divers failed to find the phone, he brought in two 30-horsepower diesel pumps to drain the reservoir, nearly emptying 2.1 million liters of water. After four days of pumping, the official found the phone, but it was already unusable, and he lost his job as a result.

After the incident was exposed, another local official said, “He has been suspended and is under investigation. Water is an essential resource and cannot be wasted like this.”

However, the official, Vishwas, has his own reasons. He said in a video statement that he had received oral permission from another official to drain “some water from the reservoir into a nearby canal,” which “would actually benefit farmers as they would get more water.” He also claimed that the drained water came from the overflow section of a dam and was “not suitable for irrigation.” In addition, Vishwas claimed that his phone contained sensitive data.

However, these reasons do not absolve him of the charge of abusing his power.

It is reported that the phone used by the official is worth about $1,200 (approximately RMB 8,500) and appears to be a flagship model from a mainstream manufacturer. Generally speaking, flagship phones in this price range should have IP68-rated dust and water resistance, which means they can survive underwater for a period of time. However, this function does not support long-term submersion, and the phone may still be damaged after being underwater for a long time. The official’s phone stayed underwater for four days, which was beyond saving.
