Mobile phone prices continue to decline, and in the future, hundred-yuan phones are expected to use OLED screens

Mobile phone prices are decreasing and $100 phones are predicted to have OLED displays

【PhoneAuto News】Recently, the global mobile phone market seems to have entered a sluggish state, with overall shipments also declining. Although terminal market shipments have declined, competition between upstream raw material suppliers continues, which is more evident in the mobile phone panel industry. Some institutions predict that due to domestic display companies’ continued price offensive, the average selling price of rigid OLED panels for smartphones may drop to around $10 within the year. Perhaps in the near future, we will have hope of seeing OLED screens popularized on thousand-yuan or even hundred-yuan phones.

Flexible OLED screen

Some analytical institutions predict that Samsung Display’s average selling price of rigid OLEDs may drop to around $15 in the second half of the year. If the price of rigid OLEDs drops to around $10, the company’s profitability will also decline. However, in order to better participate in market competition, Samsung Display has to lower the price of OLEDs, which also affects the price of flexible OLEDs supplied by domestic panel companies to a certain extent.

According to analysis, the proportion of Chinese smartphone companies using domestic panel companies is also increasing. Chinese flexible OLED manufacturers include BOE, CSOT, Tianma, and Visionox. These companies have proposed lower supply prices to finished product companies while suffering losses. Some analysts believe that as a result, Samsung Display, which is worried that the rigid OLED start-up rate will be even lower than now, can only further reduce panel prices.

CSOT OLED screen

Unlike flexible OLEDs, rigid OLEDs have the characteristics of not bending or being hard and are mainly used on medium-priced smartphones. Samsung Display is the largest supplier, while flexible OLEDs are more suitable for high-end smartphones.

Regardless of whether it is OLED or LCD, the prices of smartphone panels are expected to inevitably decline this year. The average selling price of Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon (LTPS) LCD may also drop to below $10. If the decline in LCD prices intensifies, OLED prices will also face greater downward pressure than they do now.
