Lei Jun Defends Xiaomi's Success Amidst Being Labelled as an Assembly Plant at Just 13 Years Old

【Mobile China News】Yesterday was the 130th anniversary celebration of Wuhan University. As an outstanding alumnus of Wuhan University, Lei Jun, the founder and chairman of Xiaomi Technology, appeared at the celebration and announced a donation of 1.3 billion yuan in cash to support the development of his alma mater. He also delivered a speech on stage. Shortly after the anniversary celebration, Lei Jun posted the full text of his speech on his personal social media, responding to some of the criticisms and opinions of society about Xiaomi.

In his speech, Lei Jun stated that many people have misunderstandings about Xiaomi. What are those misunderstandings? Some claim that Xiaomi is just an assembly factory, that Xiaomi invests little in research and development, and that Xiaomi lacks core technologies. Overall, compared to the top global tech companies, Xiaomi does indeed have some gaps. But as a company that has been around for 13 years, Xiaomi’s investment and strength in research and development are still quite strong.

Lei Jun mentioned that in the past five years, Xiaomi’s annual compound growth rate of research and development investment has reached 38.4%. In 2022, Xiaomi invested 16.2 billion yuan in research and development, and it is expected to reach 20 billion yuan in 2023. Over the next five years, Xiaomi will invest over 100 billion yuan in technology research and development. In terms of 5G standard patents, Huawei is the global leader with a market share of 14%, while Xiaomi’s patent share is 4.1%, already in the top ten globally. Regarding misunderstandings, Lei Jun said that he had been bothered by them in the past. But later he realized that there was no need to be caught up in them. It matters more to focus on one’s own growth.
