United Automobile Workers Union promotes comprehensive unionization of US automobile manufacturers

United Automobile Workers Union advocates for widespread unionization of US automobile manufacturers

【PhoneAuto News】The United Auto Workers (UAW) launched an innovative website on November 29th, providing a platform for automotive workers to sign union cards and contact organizers. This initiative marks a large-scale unionization effort by the UAW targeting at least 13 automakers.

According to the UAW, the campaign aims to attract approximately 150,000 workers who have not yet joined a union, effectively doubling the number of UAW members in the automotive industry. The targeted companies include traditional automakers like Tesla, Toyota, and Volkswagen, as well as electric vehicle manufacturers Rivian and Lucid, which UAW considers “Tesla’s rivals.” Additionally, luxury brands like BMW and Nissan have also become targets for the UAW.

The UAW stated that if 70% of workers at an automotive plant sign up to join the union through the website and establish an organizing committee, the UAW will seek recognition or request a union representation election. This change in strategy aims to amplify workers’ voices and rights, ensuring they receive fair treatment in terms of wages, benefits, and working conditions.

It’s worth noting that this is not the UAW’s first attempt to organize unions in the automotive industry. However, in recent years, the UAW has faced challenges in negotiations with the “Detroit Three” automakers. In September of this year, the UAW organized a major strike against these three companies, eventually reaching a tentative agreement in November.

Despite reaching agreements with General Motors and Ford last week, the UAW still plans to launch a new large-scale organized labor movement on the contract expiration date, April 30, 2028. This indicates that the labor-management relationship in the U.S. automotive industry may still be tense in the coming years.

However, with the rise of electric vehicles and the transformation of global supply chains, some observers believe that now is a critical moment for automotive workers to form unions. With the entry of a new generation of automotive workers, they hope to ensure their rights are protected and obtain better treatment and benefits in their jobs.
