【PhoneAuto News】Recently, an article by an American netizen claimed that Tesla has started implementing controversial “congestion fees” at some Supercharger stations, charging $1 per minute. This fee aims to prevent customers from charging their vehicles to 100%, allowing more vehicles to better utilize the Supercharger network in areas with heavy traffic or busy journeys, thus reducing waiting times.
Actually, these congestion fees will replace some of the idle fees at Supercharger stations. When a vehicle reaches a certain state of charge (SoC), Tesla will start charging the congestion fee, making charging more expensive and encouraging owners to stop charging early and make space available for others. Tesla stated that the congestion fee will be charged at a rate of $1 per minute and will start when the vehicle reaches 90% SoC.

Tesla introduces new congestion fee regulations. Currently, Tesla owners have to pay $0.5 per minute as idle fees after their vehicles are fully charged. If all charging stalls at a station are occupied, this fee will double. The new congestion fee from Tesla will replace these idle fees with a standard fee of $1 per minute, and it will start counting when the vehicle reaches 90% charge. Tesla stated on its support website, “Tesla’s application will notify you when your vehicle passes the charging level threshold or completes charging. When the Supercharger is full, congestion fees will accumulate until your vehicle is removed.” It also added that there is no limit to the accumulation of idle or congestion fees.
It is currently unclear whether SoC or rates will vary between different Supercharger stations. However, Tesla pointed out that when selecting a Supercharger station, the congestion fee will be displayed on the vehicle’s screen. Currently, these fees will apply to certain Supercharger stations in the United States. Tesla mentioned that if a charging station is “busy,” even if there are available charging stalls, the congestion fee will still be automatically applied. Similar to idle fees, congestion fees will also apply to owners with free lifetime Supercharging privileges, but only after the vehicle completes charging.
