Toyota showcases cutting-edge electric vehicle production line in Japan, aiming to catch up with Europe and the United States in the EV era

Toyota displays state-of-the-art EV production line in Japan, seeking to compete with Europe and the US in the electric vehicle era

【Phoneauto News】Toyota recently announced its next-generation battery electric vehicle production line and multiple new technologies in Japan. The new demonstration line may herald a new era of manufacturing for this Japanese automotive giant, as its goal is to catch up with its American and European competitors in the electric vehicle race.

One of the highlights of the new production line is the gigacasting technology announced by the brand’s Miraizukuri Factory in June 2023. Gigacasting refers to the use of large single-piece castings for the main structural components of vehicles to reduce weight, improve structural integrity, and simplify the manufacturing process. Toyota claims to have “abundant knowledge” in molds used for low-pressure molding and die casting. The brand has already made numerous improvements in casting technology for engine manufacturing. It is reported that with gigacasting, the pre-changeover time will be reduced from 24 hours to just 20 minutes.

Toyota will also use proprietary analysis technology to improve the quality of castings and reduce the number of defective products. In addition, Toyota’s EV new modular structure and self-contained production will account for half of the entire production process. The company also plans to invest in the new production line at its Motomachi factory in Aichi Prefecture.

Toyota has also previously announced the development roadmap and timeline for solid-state batteries. Toyota seems to be at a crucial stage in the development of solid-state batteries, as it announced in June this year that it has successfully developed a solid-state battery that can travel 745 miles and be fully charged in just 10 minutes. Its goal is to bring solid-state batteries to the market by 2027-2028.

Under the leadership of CEO Hiroji Sato, Toyota plans to launch 10 new electric vehicles by 2026, with the goal of selling 1.5 million electric vehicles per year. The plan includes the launch of a three-row electric SUV, which will be assembled at its manufacturing plant in Georgetown, Kentucky in the United States. The company is also investing an additional $2.1 billion in a battery plant in North Carolina.
