Since its official commercial use in November 2019, “5G” has been around for four years. It is believed that many people have already switched to 5G phones and have experienced some changes in their lifestyle due to the high-speed 5G network. However, what we still want to know is whether the original promises of “5G changing lives” and “5G empowering all industries” have been fulfilled.

A while ago, PhoneAuto had the privilege of visiting Ganzhou, Jiangxi, and witnessed how 5G is helping various industries, truly embodying the meaning of “5G empowering all industries.”

Our first stop was Hezi Town in Anyuan County, which is nearly 2000 kilometers away from Beijing. We visited the local government’s “Digital Command Center.” The deputy mayor of Hezi Town described this system as follows:

“Compared to the traditional management model of rural towns, the digital management model is more comprehensive, systematic, real-time, and convenient. When put into use, it has a very positive impact on the local production and life. On the Digital Hezi platform, there are five sections: Red Hezi, Livelihood Hezi, Industry Hezi, Safe Hezi, and Beautiful Hezi. Each section corresponds to a different field. It can provide a real-time view of the entire town, truly achieving ‘one screen to observe the whole town, one screen to govern the whole town.'”

The Digital Command Center is like the “brain” of Hezi Town, capable of monitoring the situation of the entire town. The promotion of rural digitization can also allow local residents to enjoy the benefits of digital technology.

Afterwards, we also visited the Smart Orchard in Anyuan County. It was like witnessing the scene often mentioned in geography textbooks, where foreign farm owners can manage thousands of acres of crops by themselves.

This orchard has a complete irrigation and fertilization system, and the management personnel can control the orchard by simply clicking a few times on a large screen. This automated management also enables more scientific cultivation for farmers, which means better growth and higher fruit quality.

With the development of technology, agriculture has shifted from simple manual labor to technology-driven and assembly line-like operations. Most smart orchards are equipped with IoT agricultural devices. With the low latency characteristic of 5G networks, these devices can quickly respond to the operators’ commands, thereby improving efficiency. Over time, the stereotype of “farmers = laborers” will be broken, and agriculture will become an industry with more technological content.

It is worth mentioning that in Anyuan Town, Ganzhou Mobile, in partnership with ZTE Communications, has distributed 5G base stations on high mountains and fields, achieving full coverage of 5G networks in fruit orchards. This has laid a solid foundation for the construction of smart orchards.

Of course, having good quality fruits is important, but having a market for them is equally crucial. In today’s world where 5G networks are gradually becoming popular, Anyuan Town has also helped farmers create a 5G live streaming platform to support the external sales of agricultural products. During our interview, there was a data comparison that caught my attention:

“Before selling our oranges through live streaming, we mostly sold them for one yuan per kilogram to the orange collectors, but now with live streaming, we can sell them to customers for a few yuan per kilogram,” which means going from “one yuan” to “a few yuan.” This change represents the ability of farmers to buy some “big-ticket” items for their families during the Chinese New Year or expand their orchard. It also signifies the expansion of information channels, as these fruit farmers have transitioned from being behind-the-scenes suppliers to becoming front-line sellers. I could also sense from their calm expressions that their lives are indeed getting better.

Next, PhoneAuto also visited the Digital Longnan Government Center located in Longnan City, Ganzhou. Here, we can see the Smart Longnan Command Center created by Ganzhou Mobile for Longnan City. It functions not only as the “digital brain” of the entire Longnan City but also as a “big butler” for the citizens. In the past, various government services were fragmented, but the Digital Longnan Government Center brings together all relevant affairs. This not only improves the efficiency of government officials but also allows citizens to have less running around when handling related business.

Finally, we arrived at Zhangyuan Tungsten Industry in Chongyi County, Ganzhou. This is one of the few domestic companies with the most complete industrial chain in the tungsten industry and is undoubtedly a leading player. Zhangyuan Tungsten Industry began its digital transformation as early as 2017. Its greatest achievement is the increased transparency in production management and the further improvement of the pass rate, which has risen from 95% to 99%.

Within the factory premises, Zhangyuan Tungsten Industry has introduced a 5G private network on the production line and has also deployed ZTE’s 5G CPE in some areas. This allows managers to simultaneously operate multiple 5G AGV carts in different factory buildings, thereby enhancing efficiency and reducing production risks.

What you can see is that digital transformation for businesses is more like “planting trees.” It’s not an immediate upgrade, but over time, it gradually demonstrates its advantages.

At the end of this event, I also had some questions and interviewed Ganzhou Mobile. For example, what achievements have Ganzhou Mobile made in the process of promoting the digitalization of industries in Ganzhou, and what role do they play?

In the development of digitalization, Ganzhou Mobile’s mission is to help revitalize the central “red revolutionary base areas” and become the main force in digital construction. So in the process of digital transformation and development, Ganzhou Mobile has already built over 11,000 5G base stations, achieving 100% coverage in counties and towns. At the same time, in 2022, Ganzhou Mobile also assisted the Ganzhou Municipal Government in becoming a nationwide Gigabit City, earning the title of a nationwide Gigabit City.

In terms of industrial digital transformation, Ganzhou Mobile has established a 5G Open Laboratory and a Network Security Center in Ganzhou, supporting the government in creating benchmark cases of industrial planning and digital transformation. This has resulted in rapid development in industrial digital transformation. For example, enterprises such as Zhongyuan Tungsten, Gree Electric Appliances, and China Rare Earth have received national awards such as the 03 Special Project and the 5G Display Cup, achieving the establishment of benchmarks. This allows industry partners and enterprises to truly experience the convenience and benefits brought by new technologies.

In terms of urban digital transformation and governance, Ganzhou Mobile has also created benchmark cases of smart cities in counties such as Longnan, Quannan, Yudu, and Xingguo. Through the application of technologies such as 5G, the Internet of Things, edge computing, and big data modeling, government data aggregation and governance are achieved. This enables efficient social governance and management, realizing benefits for the people and promoting industries with good governance. This allows government departments and the general public to truly experience the convenience brought about by digital transformation.

If we summarize this trip to Ganzhou with the concept of “using technology for good,” I think it would be too narrow. Now, it’s already the fourth year of 5G commercialization, and China has built the world’s largest and most advanced 5G network. As the “road builder” of the digital economy, telecom operators and communication service providers are continually advancing to support the development of the digital economy.

During this trip to Ganzhou, I personally experienced how Ganzhou Mobile and ZTE empower various industries with technologies such as 5G, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things. This is not only a good deed for revitalizing the economy in towns and improving people’s lives, but also a responsibility and obligation for promoting China’s development and revitalizing China’s foundation as a major enterprise.
