Of course, the Porsche Design that is familiar to Chinese users is undoubtedly the Huawei Mate series, from the first generation to the Mate 50 RS Porsche Design, their cooperation has achieved mutual success.
In November 2016, Huawei officially released the Mate 9 series, bringing the Mate 9 Porsche Design created in collaboration with Porsche Design, priced at 8,999 yuan. Although the price was not cheap, it was wildly sought after, and the market saw a premium, laying the foundation for the subsequent premiumization of Huawei products. Compared to the regular version, the biggest difference of the Mate 9 Porsche Design is its 5.5-inch 2K curved display, with a sleek and delicate appearance. In addition to its business style black body, it also has a delicate hairline texture and a metallic graphite texture, which adds a unique sense of fashion.
In October 2017, Huawei officially released the Mate 10 Porsche Design, which comes in pure black with vertical strip designs on the back, highlighting Porsche Design’s unique sense of speed. This phone also features an exclusive Porsche Design UI and a more luxurious packaging design, including rich exclusive accessories and a unique premium experience. The price remains at 8,999 yuan.
In March 2018, Huawei Mate RS Porsche Design was unveiled in Paris. The product was created by Huawei, Leica, and Porsche Design. It is worth mentioning that 2018 was the year Porsche launched the 2018 model of the 911 GT3 RS to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Porsche sports cars. The Mate RS was custom-built by Huawei for the 911 GT3 RS under Porsche Design’s commission. This year, the price of Mate RS Porsche Design has reached 9,999 yuan and 12,999 yuan.
In October 2018, Huawei released the Mate20 RS Porsche Design in London. The price of this generation of products is also stable at 12,999 yuan.
In September 2019, Huawei Mate30 RS Porsche Design was officially released. The design inspiration comes from the sunroof of Porsche sports cars. With selected imported cowhide and outstanding performance, it combines excellent performance with eye-catching design. The price remains at 12,999 yuan.
In October 2020, Huawei Mate40 RS Porsche Design was officially released. It inherits the design language of supercars, cleverly combining the iconic dynamic flying line design with the sculptural curved body, using innovative technology to interpret classic aesthetics and show future charm. Huawei also introduced ceramic material for it, creating nano-microcrystalline ceramics through innovative processes and multiple steps, bringing a unique feel and appearance exclusive to Porsche Design. In September 2022, Huawei Mate 50 RS Porsche Design was officially released, with a design that continues the supercar design genes. It features a distinctive star diamond design for the rear camera, a centrally symmetrical aesthetic, and a combination of sculpted ceramic body and supercar-inspired lines, creating a sense of technological power and an overall elegant and formidable look. The new product also introduces a brand new ink blue porcelain color, using the CeraBicolor dual-color ceramic process, resulting in a natural and seamless blend. Of course, this also marks the end of the collaboration between Huawei Mate series and Porsche Design. With the Mate 60 series, Huawei has created its own high-end brand, the Extraordinary Master, starting anew to master the high-end and achieve extraordinary accomplishments.
Today, after the expiration of the collaboration between Huawei and Porsche Design, Honor has taken over the task of building a high-end brand. Since becoming independent, Honor has experienced a long climb in the market and has achieved good results in terms of overall shipments and market share in the high-end segment. Especially after going all in on the foldable screen, Honor’s voice and sales in the foldable screen market have been increasing day by day. The recent milestone of producing the one millionth foldable screen is the best testament to this.
Now, facing Huawei’s return to the high-end market, Honor is also facing unprecedented challenges. When confronted with Apple and Samsung, the collaboration with Porsche Design undoubtedly brings higher possibilities for Honor to establish itself in the high-end market and potentially create a unique image as a high-end brand, gaining more recognition from consumers. Of course, following in the footsteps of Huawei and Porsche Design, this collaboration by Honor is also filled with challenges and uncertainties, placing extremely high demands on Honor’s high-end operations. The reputation of this collaboration will be revealed when the upcoming Magic6 series is unveiled.
Currently, there have been leaks online about the Magic6 Porsche Design, featuring a centered dual-hole curved display and a back Deco design with a square-to-round plus edge-cutting arrangement, making it highly identifiable. In terms of specifications, it will also have OV50H and OV50K, a 160 million pixel periscope telephoto lens, variable aperture, and satellite communication support, showcasing its strong product capabilities.
In addition, this collaboration between Honor and Porsche Design is likely not limited to the Magic6 series but may also extend to foldable screen products, thereby bringing better high-end attributes. Of course, in addition to smartphones, there is also the possibility of collaboration with other products. This all-encompassing strategy is expected to enhance the combat capabilities of individual Honor products and the overall brand tone. Furthermore, there are also reports that in addition to Porsche Design empowering Honor, Honor will also introduce some advanced technologies to Porsche, such as Qinghai Lake batteries, MagicOS, and so on.
As for what products Honor and Porsche Design’s collaboration will bring, let’s wait and see.
