Major Reforms Implemented by General Cruise 9 Executives Fired, Workforce Reduced by 24%
【PhoneAuto News】On December 15th, PhoneAuto learned that Cruise, the autonomous vehicle subsidiary of General Motors, announced a layoff of 900 employees, accounting for 24% of its total workforce, to expand the comprehensive restructuring of its struggling business. Cruise stated that these changes reflect our decision to focus on a more thoughtful commercialization plan, with safety as our guiding principle, which means a reduced demand for business operations and company personnel. In addition, this layoff will affect approximately 900 positions, primarily impacting employees in operational roles. Some technical positions will also be affected, but engineers will essentially not be laid off.
Recently, due to Cruise’s traffic accident case, California banned its autonomous vehicles from operating on public roads. Subsequently, Cruise also suspended all self-driving taxi operations in the United States and expanded safety reviews of self-driving taxis. As a result, CEO Kyle Vogt and Chief Product Officer Daniel Kan resigned. Cruise claims that this “orderly suspension” is another step in rebuilding public trust. Cruise will conduct comprehensive safety checks and continue to train autonomous vehicles in closed environments, ensuring a “positive simulated driving program” to maintain the momentum of advancing autonomous driving technology.
