The Volkswagen ID7, a new representative in the electric vehicle market, has started production in Germany and will be locally produced in the future

【Phoneauto News】Volkswagen recently announced that its new all-electric sedan, the ID.7, has officially started production at its factory in Emden, Germany. This is the second electric vehicle based on the MEB platform to be produced at this factory, following the ID.4. Volkswagen has already started accepting orders for the ID.7 in Germany and expects to begin delivering to customers in the autumn of this year.

The ID.7 is a mid-to-high-end electric sedan under the Volkswagen brand, positioned between the traditional Passat and CC models. It features sleek lines and modern design, as well as spacious interior space and advanced technology configurations. The ID.7 is available with two different battery options, 77 kilowatt-hours and 86 kilowatt-hours.

The 77-kilowatt-hour battery is inherited from the ID.3 and ID.4 and can provide a WLTP range of 615 kilometers (382 miles). The 86-kilowatt-hour battery is newly developed and can provide a WLTP range of 700 kilometers (435 miles). Both batteries support fast charging, with the 77-kilowatt-hour battery capable of reaching a maximum of 170 kilowatts and the 86-kilowatt-hour battery capable of reaching a maximum of 200 kilowatts.

In addition to the battery, the ID.7 also features the new APP550 motor, which is the first motor used on the MEB platform. It can deliver a maximum power of 210 kilowatts (282 horsepower). In comparison, the rear-wheel drive motor previously used on the MEB platform had only 150 kilowatts (201 horsepower), and the front-wheel drive motor had only 80 kilowatts (107 horsepower). Currently, the ID.7 is only available in rear-wheel drive version, but a four-wheel drive version (known as GTX in Europe) may be introduced in the future.

The ID.7 plan will enter the North American market in 2024 and the Chinese market. The car will be locally produced by two joint venture companies – FAW-Volkswagen and SAIC-Volkswagen. The ID.7 is an important part of Volkswagen’s global promotion of electrification strategy and a weapon against competitors such as Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. As for whether it can succeed in the market, let’s wait and see.
