Volvo to halt diesel car production in early 2024, CEO praises electric vehicles

【Phoneauto News】On September 19th local time, Volvo shared their new plan to stop producing diesel cars. To celebrate Climate Week in New York, the automaker announced that they will officially cease production of all diesel models in the coming months.

Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo, said at the press conference, “Electric power systems are our future and superior to internal combustion engines: they produce less noise, less vibration, lower maintenance costs for customers, and zero emissions. We are fully committed to creating a high-quality portfolio of pure electric vehicles to meet customers’ expectations of Volvo, which is an important part of our response to climate change.”

In the statement released, the company also pointed out that they sold their shares in a joint venture with ExxonMobil last year, which means they have sold off their remaining internal combustion engine development assets. Volvo Cars stated, “We will not spend a single krona on developing new internal combustion engines.”

Volvo plans to produce their last diesel car in early next year. This information was released before their plan to only produce electric vehicles starting from 2030 and achieve full climate neutrality by 2024.

Last week, Volvo and Connected Energy announced their plan to recycle past electric vehicle batteries from the automaker. Unlike Tesla’s agreement with a battery recycling company, they will convert the battery energy storage systems (BESS) into containerized batteries. These BESS will be used at Volvo’s production plant in Gothenburg, Sweden.
