Mobile phone industry goes crazy again this year with these flagship configurations/technologies being released

Flagship configurations/technologies released in the mobile phone industry this year are driving the frenzy

On July 18th, OPPO officially released the news that they will launch a new phone, OPPO K11, on July 25th. Among OPPO’s product series, Find is undoubtedly the most important series, representing OPPO’s regular flagship and foldable screen phones. The Reno series is well-known among consumers, and many believe it is the successor to the OPPO R series. The K series is different from the above two, with models that have more cost-effective elements and have previously introduced competitive products.

And this upcoming OPPO K11 is not simple. According to the official introduction, this phone is aimed at a mass consumer base of five hundred million and will popularize flagship-level imaging systems for these consumers. At the same time, this phone will also have a smooth usage experience for up to four years. From this introduction, we can perceive that “imaging” and “system” should be the focus of the OPPO K11.

As for the hardware configuration, according to the current leaked information, the OPPO K11 will be equipped with a 5000mAh battery and a 100W wired fast charging endurance system. The rear main camera will use the flagship-level imaging sensor Sony IMX890. Although it is not a high-end series like Find and Reno, this K series still has many flagship-level configurations. In fact, this is the current trend in the mobile phone industry. In addition to OPPO, other major domestic smartphone manufacturers are also releasing various technologies to enhance the competitiveness of non-flagship products. This article will focus on the flagship-level configurations and technologies that have been downsized this year.

Since OPPO dares to claim “popularizing flagship imaging for five hundred million mass users,” it naturally has come prepared. Currently, this IMX890 sensor from Sony is the main source of OPPO’s confidence.

Before 2023, the Sony IMX766 sensor had a high presence, and many flagship/semi-flagship models from OPPO, vivo, and OnePlus used this 1/1.56-inch, 50 million pixel CMOS. However, in 2023, the position of the Sony IMX766 was replaced by the IMX890, which gradually became the main camera configuration for various flagship/mid-range smartphones.

Official information shows that the size of the Sony IMX890 image sensor remains at 1/1.56 inches, with a total of 50.3 million pixels. It supports four-core one-pixel merging output of approximately 12.5 million static images, with a pixel size of 2μm after pixel merging. Overall, the IMX890 performs similarly to the IMX766, but the IMX890 can achieve full-resolution 30-frame image output through CPHY, thus demonstrating better performance in terms of videos.

In fact, in 2022, manufacturers such as Motorola, Samsung, and Transsion began releasing models with 200 million pixel sensors. However, these models are all flagship phones, and their prices are generally expensive. Even the cheapest moto X30 Pro costs over 3500 yuan. Fortunately, with the release of the Honor 90 standard version, the threshold for obtaining a 200 million pixel camera has been greatly lowered by this domestic smartphone manufacturer.

Clearly, just like the mentioned OPPO K11, the camera is the main selling point of the Honor 90. Therefore, even though there is a huge price difference between the Pro version, the official did not compromise the main camera configuration of this model. According to the introduction, the main camera of the Honor 90 standard version uses a 1/1.4-inch ultra-large bottom, supports 200 million pixel photo shooting, supports 16-in-1 technology, and has a pixel size of 2.24μm after pixel merging. At the same time, the maximum aperture is F/1.9.

It is reported that the main camera sensor of the Honor 90 is the Samsung HP3, a high-end image sensor launched by Samsung in 2022. It has a super high pixel count of 200MP and can output ultra-high-definition photos of 12000×9000. It also supports video recording specifications such as 8K 30fps, 4K 120fps, and 1080P 480fps.

In the second half of 2022, the Huawei Mate50 series was launched, which was the most anticipated domestic flagship smartphone at the time. Many consumers noticed that Huawei had put a lot of effort into the Mate50 series, which resulted in the introduction of a lot of cutting-edge technology, including Beidou satellite news, super endurance, variable aperture, and more. Many of these technologies are still exclusive to Huawei’s high-end smartphones, but one feature, “Kunlun Glass,” has started to become popular among ordinary consumers.

Not long ago, the Huawei nova11 series was officially released. It is worth noting that this series, like the Huawei Mate50, is equipped with a special Kunlun Glass on the surface of the phone screen. According to the introduction, this Kunlun Glass has obtained the Swiss SGS five-star glass drop resistance certification, which improves the overall drop resistance ability by about 10 times and can effectively protect the screen from external damage.

Of course, just like the Huawei Mate50, the Kunlun Glass of the Huawei nova11 series is not included by default, and consumers need to purchase a separate version of Kunlun Glass to enjoy the 10 times drop resistance capability, which incurs an additional cost of 200 yuan. However, considering the cost of screen replacement, which could be several hundred yuan if accidentally dropped and damaged, Kunlun Glass seems to be worth purchasing.

Before 2023, although the competition in the mobile phone industry was already fierce, few manufacturers focused on storage in this competition. Therefore, although there were some 1TB smartphones on the market, their prices were too expensive. For example, Samsung’s S series and Note series have once launched 1TB storage for their high-end versions, and their prices were around 10,000 yuan, which is really discouraging. However, the situation is different in 2023.

Due to the imbalance of supply and demand in the storage chip industry, significant price reductions in products, and intensified competition in the mobile phone industry, brands such as Redmi and realme have successively launched very affordable 1TB storage smartphones this year, such as Redmi Note12 Turbo, Redmi K60, realme GT Neo5, realme GT Neo5 SE, and so on. Among them, the 16GB+1TB version of Redmi K60 is priced at less than 3,000 yuan, and the regular price of the 16GB+1TB version of Redmi Note12 Turbo is around 2,300 yuan, but according to feedback from netizens, some platforms have “dropped” the price to around 1,900 yuan, which is considered great value for money.

In early January 2023, the OnePlus 11 was officially released. Many consumers noticed that in addition to the conventional configuration improvements, this time OnePlus 11 also brought a lot of black technology. Among them, the “memory gene recombination technology” is worth paying attention to. The official introduction states that with the combination of 16GB of large running memory, OnePlus 11 has passed the 48-month smoothness certification of Nande. Moreover, OnePlus has not limited this technology to flagship phones. After the OnePlus 11, the memory gene recombination technology quickly appeared on models such as OnePlus Ace 2 and OnePlus Ace 2V.

According to the introduction, memory gene recombination technology is developed by OnePlus based on the ColorOS supercomputing platform. It completely reconstructs the underlying operating architecture of Android memory, increasing the nanosecond-level data throughput of the phone by a whopping 16 times; reducing scene lag by 50%; and increasing the number of background active apps to 44. This technology, combined with LPDDR5X running memory in OnePlus 11, Ace2, and other models, can effectively guarantee users’ daily experience and greatly improve the lifespan of the phone.

The ultimate meaning of technological progress is to benefit the general consumers. In the field of smartphones, the deployment of flagship-level configurations, technologies, and cutting-edge technologies is the best embodiment of this statement. In the year 2023, which is only halfway through, after the OPPO K11, we may expect to see more flagship configurations appearing on mid-range smartphones.
