Huawei's Continuous Innovation is Set to Overtake Apple Yet Again in the Premium Smartphone Market

In light of this, Nabila Popal, Research Director of IDC’s Global Tracker Team, shared her views on the competition and future development of Huawei and Apple.

Nabila recalled that Apple’s market share in China was approximately 7.5% in 2019. By 2023, its market share will increase to 16%. This indicates that the difficulties Huawei faced after 2019 helped this American company gain more market share. In terms of the high-end market, at its peak, Huawei occupied over 58% of the entire high-end smartphone market, while Apple was limited to 35%. By the second quarter of 2023, Apple’s market share in the Chinese high-end smartphone market reached 72%, while Huawei had shrunk to around 16%.
When discussing the possibility of “Huawei surpassing Apple in this field again,” Nabila stated that Apple, as a well-known brand, has brand loyalty that everyone understands or refers to as brand stickiness. It is very difficult for Huawei to defeat Apple, as once you are trapped, it is hard to get out. Generally, you will be bound by this brand and operating system.
