Huawei leads growth in folding screen market, OPPO/vivo perform well
【Phoneauto News】Recently, a well-known domestic research institution, iResearch Consulting, released a report on the foldable smartphone market in China. The report took stock of the domestic foldable smartphone market in May of this year and conducted statistics from various aspects such as stock market, incremental market, and user distribution, providing an overview of the current situation of the foldable screen market in China.
According to the data provided by iResearch Consulting, in the stock market of foldable smartphones in May 2023, the Huawei brand leads the overall foldable smartphone market with a market share of 43.7%, firmly holding the first place. Samsung and OPPO ranked second and third with 26.4% and 20.0% respectively. Among them, OPPO Find N2 Flip made it into the top three in terms of model performance. Overall, the proportion of clamshell models exceeds three-quarters.

In the incremental market of foldable smartphones in May 2023, Huawei, OPPO, and Vivo ranked in the top three in terms of user numbers. With the release of more and more new small foldable smartphones, vertical fold models have performed well, with OPPO and Vivo’s vertical fold models occupying the top two positions in the incremental market in terms of user numbers. Among clamshell models, Huawei Mate Xs 2 performed strongly. In terms of the replacement of foldable smartphones, OPPO and Vivo’s vertical fold models also occupy the top two positions in terms of user numbers among replacement users, with Vivo X Flip having a slightly higher proportion than OPPO Find N2 Flip among replacement users.
In terms of the replacement of foldable smartphones, the main group of users who switch to foldable smartphones are users of the Huawei Mate series and P series models from the past 2-3 years. Relatively speaking, the series used by replacement users are more concentrated, with the top 10 series accounting for 60.1% of users. Huawei and iPhone users are the main groups that switch to foldable smartphones.
In terms of user profiles, male users are still the main group choosing foldable screen phones, with users aged 31-45 accounting for over 50%. The purchasing power of this group is relatively high, with nearly 40% being middle-class consumers. In addition, the existing user base is mainly concentrated in Guangdong, Beijing, Jiangsu, and other provinces and cities, with the northern and eastern regions of China being the main areas. The proportion of users in first and second-tier cities reaches 53%.
As for the categories of using foldable screen phones, practical tools, short videos, and social chatting are the main daily usage categories for existing users in May. Looking at different brands, Huawei and Honor users have more prominent characteristics in categories such as office, security, and smart apps. OPPO and vivo, on the other hand, have more prominent characteristics in social, shopping, and lifestyle apps.
