Qualcomm and Iridium cancel cooperation, originally planned to provide satellite connectivity for Android devices.
Collaboration between Qualcomm and Iridium for satellite connectivity on Android devices called off.
【PhoneAuto News】Foreign media reports that Qualcomm and Iridium had originally planned to provide satellite-based connectivity services for Android phones, but the plan was ultimately canceled.
According to Iridium’s press release, the technology was successfully developed and demonstrated by all parties involved, but smartphone manufacturers decided not to incorporate it into their devices, leading Qualcomm to terminate the agreement. Qualcomm, in a statement, said that smartphone companies will continue to use standard-based solutions. This means that phones will continue to connect to cell towers, which then connect to base stations, and the base stations receive signals from high orbit satellites.

Snapdragon Satellite was supposed to launch in the second half of this year, but with the termination of the deal, this technology will not materialize. However, Iridium still believes that the satellite communication market has great potential and states that they can “freely re-engage with original equipment manufacturers of smartphones, other chip manufacturers, and smartphone operating system developers”.
