【PhoneAuto News】On June 30, according to data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China’s smartphone production from January to May this year was 416 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 8.5%.
It is understood that from January to May 2023, the production decline of China’s electronic information manufacturing industry continued to narrow, export growth has recovered, corporate profitability has steadily improved, and investment scale has maintained growth momentum. From January to May, the value added of electronic information manufacturing above designated size decreased by 0.3% year-on-year, a decrease of 0.1 percentage points compared with January to April, and the growth rate was 3.9 and 1.7 percentage points lower than the same period of the industrial and high-tech manufacturing sectors, respectively. In May, the value added of electronic information manufacturing above designated size was the same as the same period last year.
Specifically, from January to May this year, among the main products, the production of mobile phones was 565 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 2.6%, including the production of smartphones of 416 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 8.5%; the production of microcomputer equipment was 131 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 25.7%; the production of integrated circuits was 140.1 billion units, a year-on-year increase of 0.1%.

Previously, data released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology showed that in May this year, China’s mobile phone shipments reached 26.037 million units, a year-on-year increase of 25.2%, the second highest growth rate in nearly a year and a half. Among them, 5G mobile phones reached 2.0169 million units, a year-on-year increase of 13.7%. Overall, the cumulative shipments from January to May were 108 million units, a slight decrease of 0.7% year-on-year, and a turnaround is expected soon.
In recent years, due to the relatively sluggish performance of the global consumer market, the situation in the mobile phone industry has not been optimistic. Previously released data from market research firm IDC showed that global smartphone shipments in 2022 were 1.206 billion units, a year-on-year decline of 11%. In the first quarter of 2023, global smartphone shipments were 270 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 15%.
