Ford recalls 125,000 vehicles in the US for fire risk, second time in a week

【PhoneAuto News】If Mercedes-Benz was known as the “recall king” in China due to its frequent recalls, then Ford may be the “recall king” in the United States. Following the announcement on May 31st that it would recall 142,000 Lincoln cars in the United States due to fire risks, the company has recently issued another recall notice in the United States.

Ford Escape

On June 6th, according to CNN, Ford is recalling 125,322 of its SUVs and pickup trucks produced by the company, including hybrid models of the 2020-2023 Escape, 2021-2023 Lincoln Corsair, and 2022-2023 Maverick. The reason for the recall is said to be that the engine may catch fire due to oil leakage.

Ford stated in the recall notice that the specific cause of the fire may be due to a small hole formed on the engine block due to crankshaft bearing wear. Records show that the automaker has received 23 reports of engine fires worldwide. After investigating the 2.5-liter engine malfunction manufactured on or before July 7, 2022, Ford suspected that the cause of the fire was a hole in the engine block or oil pan that leaked flammable material around high-temperature components.

After discovering the problem, Ford took improvement measures to make the crankshaft bearings of the new engine more robust. It also took some repair measures to help keep flammable liquid as far away from high-temperature components as possible in the event of a malfunction. Although no engine malfunctions have been found on vehicles manufactured after September 2022, some older vehicles that have adopted remedial measures to reduce such risks still catch fire.

It is worth noting that the recalled vehicles are all hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. This is because even if the engine fails, the electric power system can still keep the vehicle running. Ford warns that the potential fire hazard will not trigger a parking warning, but continuing to drive with gasoline and oil spraying from the engine will certainly increase the risk of fire. Therefore, Ford strongly recommends that if the driver encounters any abnormal situations, they should park and turn off the vehicle.
