Man suffers minor burns after iPhone catches fire, files police complaint against Apple

【Phone Auto News】Incidents of smartphones catching fire are not uncommon, but most recent cases have mostly involved low-end Android phones. However, a recent phone fire incident occurred in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India, where an iPhone was reportedly burned in a businessman’s pocket. The specific model of the iPhone is currently unknown. The incident appears to have happened while the person was sitting inside their own house and without any external threats.

According to the Times of India, Prem Raj Singh, a 47-year-old real estate businessman from Aligarh, stated that his phone caught fire in his pocket. The report added that he first felt the phone getting hot and then it started smoking. Singh suffered burns on his left thigh and thumb and was taken to the hospital.

The Times of India quoted Singh as saying, “I took it out of my pocket and it caught fire, made a loud noise, and then it split into two pieces.” There were no external factors involved in this incident, such as the phone overheating due to being plugged into a charger or prolonged usage.

According to ETV Bharat, Singh stated that the smartphone involved was an Apple iPhone. The specific model has not been specified, but based on the pictures, it appears to be an older model like the iPhone 8 or iPhone 7. Singh mentioned that he had been using iPhones for over a decade, but after this incident, he has lost confidence in the company. The phone ultimately split into two pieces, with the front panel and back panel separating from each other. The pictures show that the iPhone was completely burned.

Singh has even filed a complaint against the brand at the Mahua Khera police station. The incident is currently under investigation. The exact cause behind the iPhone catching fire has yet to be determined. Based on past incidents, smartphones usually catch fire due to battery malfunctions or short circuits.

The last incident involving an iPhone catching fire occurred in 2021, when a man from Melbourne claimed that his iPhone X caught fire and caused second-degree burns.
