China Mobile completes 5G satellite lab verification for mobile terminal direct connection
【PhoneAuto News】Recently, PhoneAuto learned that China Mobile Research Institute has completed laboratory testing and verification of 5G mobile terminal direct connection to satellites in cooperation with industry partners such as OPPO, ZTE, and Keysight. This test verification completed the world’s first operator terminal direct connection to satellite field test in August 2022. Based on this, this laboratory test verified the landing capability of 5G mobile terminal direct connection to satellite technology, providing guidance for the commercial landing of IoT NTN technology and helping to build a highly integrated terrestrial and space fusion network with rich connections and scenarios.
This test verification is based on the 3GPP R17 NTN protocol and mobile terminals, focusing on commercial landing and conducting a series of innovative solution tests to address pain points such as capacity improvement, latency reduction, and rate enhancement. The test results show that by introducing uplink extreme subcarrier and TBSize enhancement features, the uplink network capacity can be doubled, and the uplink rate can be increased by 20%, while the downlink rate can be increased by 100%; by customizing the uplink pre-scheduling scheme, the communication delay for each message can be reduced by 0.5 seconds.

China Mobile stated that as a future direction for the evolution of air, space, and terrestrial fusion, 5G NTN has received high attention from the industry. The successful verification of the enhanced solution based on the mobile form factor is of great significance for accelerating industry maturity. In the future, face-to-face multi-regional outdoor pilot verifications will be carried out in provinces and cities such as Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Yunnan, and Liaoning, targeting areas such as forests, oceans, and mountainous areas, further promoting the deep integration of satellite and ground industry chains, and accelerating the construction of a ubiquitous network that integrates air, space, and land.
It is worth mentioning that in this experiment, Qualcomm also debugged the IMS DC underlying protocol stack based on the testing terminal equipped with the Snapdragon X70 5G modem and RF system, in cooperation with the network side, bringing the industry’s first complete new call IMS DC underlying protocol stack based on the baseband side, improving the reliability of voice services.
